Hi people, as you may have guessed, I am trying to find out what the fastest unopened e-series car is, and also the most powerful.
The reason behind the query is that I intend on building an unregistered thrash car (all mods will eventually be transferred to the road car though...) from an EB, and I want it to be a development car (for said road car). The car is an EBI Auto, base model. The plan (in order of installation) is: 1. (Locked) 3.7/3.9/4.1 diff gears 2. Manualised Auto 3. Extractors, cat, and not much else exhaust 4. Six throttle bodies (undecided on slide/butterfly yet) 5. Manual Trans 6. Port/Polish 7. Cam/Computer combination. 8. High Compression/Forced induction. I would like to know about what kind of power and 1/4 mile I will be getting by step 4/5, and what else I can do to help power/times that doesnt involve internal mods. And again, what is the current record for unopened (n/a) eseries, in both 1/4 mile time and outright power? thanks Ben *yeah, i have too many ideas floating around in my head... |

For an unopened I6 you'll want a manual so that more power is placed on the road. A port and polish would require "opening" the motor too ;) Same goes with getting a cam, or increasing the compression by means of piston change or shaving the head.

yeah, but the plan is to have the record before the commencement of step 6. After that you start to spend real money on the engine...

yeah, but this whole project is about proving how good the 4L OHC engines are in a bang-for-your-buck way, and having a fast, unopened, car is one of the steps along that path. And I'm up for all the titles I can get my hands on (like everyone really) cya Ben |

If you can see oil galleries/passages, the engine is classed as open. Windsor lower manifold and I6 camshaft are both in this class.

there are a few AU 6s out there that havent had their HG change yet as they are below the 180 mark. i believe u can run very well into the 14s with an "unopened" engine, you can substitute the port job for a good ecu retune, i was targeting 14s on stock ecu, however was running redicolously rich, much more power to be gained by a decent retune. i rekon a mid 14 sec pass would have been very well on teh cards with an aftermarket ecu or similar i am hopeing for a 14sec pass in the ef wagon without pulling the head off, having said that HG was changed by previous owner

Just go nuts and get internal work done as well, then say it's unopened, who's gonna pull it apart to find out? :P
BTW I agree with Dan Quote:

Ported?? as in ported head? thats classed as opened as far as i'm aware. i'd say high 14's would be the bench mark for an unopened I6. no one really tries though because a cam cahnge is such an easy and cheap mod. cam's are generally done before ECU/diff gears.

that is correct, ported head, hence i said in a later post that you could substitute the ported head for an aftermarket ecu and still target similar or better figures/numbers

IMO, unopened is a bit of a w*nk.
If you truely want to run the numbers "unopened" you will need an eb xr6 manual. You need the biggest factory cam so the engine remains unopened. Install lower diff gears, good flowing extractors and exhaust, custom inlet, CAI, good fuel and an edit. It also helps to take as much crap out as possible, lighter seats etc Chrispy |

I'd like to see an award for the most longwinded title/tenuous grip on a record unopened title.
Eg. Fastest BA2 manual unopened BOSS with catback, underdrives and Filter/CAI but without EDIT or headers. Top that! |

Money spent on mods is wasted on any car. Captain obvious FTW!
If anything I'd rather spend it on a cheaper car like an E-series, at least if you write it off you can reshell it and put your driveline back in for cheap. |
