DVD burners

Hey all, I want to get a DVD burner but I don’t think my PC can handle it. Whats the minmium requirements for one?

Also where is the best and cheapest place to get one???Any recommendations for brands?

What is your current computer specs. Especially power supply, CPU and OS. It shouldn't use much more power than a standard CD burner. Any winXP computer should take it no worries.

Okies when i go home tonight I'll post up my specs. Yeah it does run XP and its a Pentium III, but not sure on the rest..

Should be right then. As long as you can burn CD's then you should be able to burn DVD's. Just make sure you have the necessary space on your hard drive to create a DVD.

pretty much all they need are a decent cpu 333mhz? or up 64mb ram and few hundred mb's free.

there shouldnt be a prob if XP runs fine on your current machine as its min requirements are a little higher than that of a dvd burner

To achieve the specified writing and reading performance it is important that the DVD Burner is connected to the IDE port via an 80 way ribbon cable and that the IDE port is at least UDMA 66 or above.

So if you get 16x burner, you will need to meet the above to burn to the specs of the used media, and have error free burns.

If XP runs on your PC then it's got enough go in it, XP min was slightly higher then all other OS's.
I would have said Pioneer make the best until my new one never worked from day 1. And they replaced it with a Samsung, It's good have no problems.
There that cheap now Dual layer burners you can grab them for $40 just about anywhere.

Have a read through that, the guy who wrote it gets drives before they are released retail, puts them through their paces. I've had Pioneer drives since the 107D, been faultless since I brought them. Current one which is the DVR-111 is pretty damn good.

He also has a website dedicated to modified firmware for drives http://www.speedlabs.org

Might has well jump in here,
Don't want to high jack your thread but yeah.

I have a dvd burner:
Lite-On DVDRW SHW-1635S

And i can't burn cds off it, i can burn dvds
fine, but the cds just wont burn.
Any idea what would be preventing this?

Some DVD Lingo to take notice of when buying

R (writeable)
RW (re-writeable)
+, -, +/- (recordable format type, + or - or both +/-)
DL (Dual Layer)

And just because it says .. say 8x DVD burner, and then lists the formats its supports (DVD+/-R,+RW etc) doesn't mean its gunna burn DVD+R, DVD-R AND DVD+RW at the same speed, some to most of the DVD drives will have staggered speeds. Eg, 8x DVD+R, 6x DVD-R, 4x DVD+RW.

If you are going to be using DVD RW alot, not many drives support DVD+/-RW, they are usualy one OR the other, so keep that in mind.

Dual Layer is the next best recordable format out the atm, but its still rather expensive for the blank DVD's. Once again, getting both +/- Dual Layer is a wise investment.

With all that in mind, browse a few of your favourite online stores and check the options listed on the drives and make your mind there.

Iv'e got the "LiteOn SHM-165P6S04C" dual layer burner, works perfectly everytime, I use both "Nero 7" and "1 Click DVD copy", it's the 2nd LiteOn Iv'e owned and certainly wont be the last.
Regarding specs, reading the box the burner came in they state system requirements as being,

CPU: Pentium 4 1.3Ghz or higher
Operating System: Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
Memory: 128Mb or higher (256Mb recommended)
Hard Drive: 650Mb free for software installation, 9Gb space or higher required for creating a DVD image.

There 2 different DVD formats. For arguments sake, a DVD is still a DVD, its how the data is put onto the DVD that makes it a + or a -. As such you can buy blank DVD+R's and DVD-R's. So getting a burner that is DVD+/-R means it can burn to both standards, not just one.

And yes, buy a Dual Layer, it's the next step -short term- in DVD evolution. Long Term is HD-DVD (High Definition) and Blu-Ray .... >>Here's<< Something to make you cringe
