Default Will Performance Mods go with Folden Closure?

The impending closure of 'our' two manufacturers obviously has consequences for OEMs but consider the implications the loss of the 6s and in particular the V8s will have on the mods industries at large, with no generic engines, brake systems or wheel manufacturers.
Without any commonality, will enthusiasts be limited to online 'buy n bolt' for your say 2011 Kia Cerato 1.6 ....?.

If people keep buying the parts in sustainable amounts, then the people supplying them will stay in business. Simple.

Oh, I have a feeling that post 2016/2017 is going to be a boom time for the after market in Australia
as buyers get in and customise their Falcons and Commodores rather than buy new cars....

As one door shuts, an excellent opportunity opens up for local industries to step up and make a lot of money.

Hasn't hurt the grey import brigade any so far, none of those cars were sold here and there's workshops and spare parts places everywhere dedicated to them

We can look to the British Motor industry as an example of what happens when local manufacturing takes a dive on a scale not dissimilar to here where the after-market and specialist servicing industries are now almost as big as the manufacturing base was - at least in terms of employment and gross revenues.

I'd expect similar here.

Cheers

Falcon and Commodore arent the only two cars which get modified, the JDM scene is worth big $$$.

But surely there's limited space in that market.
I 'get' Mugen Honda etc but there are just so many Folden centred businesses that will want to diversify from their declining existing customers.
Vehicle tech is moving too fast to make a local production run work so your left with online bolt ons for pure performance vehicles surely....?.
I get the feeling gen y are not as interested, more into gaming etc....
Those of us with scars and dirty greasy hands are a declining number.

I get the feeling you dont understand Gen Y, I know plenty of young guys into cars...they are just not australian made cars. doesnt mean they are any less interested in cars, just different cars to you, and most dont have scars becuase the bolts on their cars havent rusted up...

I saw a hyundai getz the other day with a cannon exhaust protruding out back end like dachshunds donger, I think long after ford and holden are gone there will be dudes that want to tinker with their wheels, and lets face it, theres an awful lot of whitegoods out there that really need modding once our locals are gone.

The one hope is that with the declining value of the $A these 'white goods' will become more expensive, forcing owners to hang on to them and we continue,as a restoration 'cottage industry' keeping them on the road.....what a future!
Our market size means we have no influence either.

welcome to the new Cuba, where 50 yr old cars are an every day sight and the cottage industry keeping them mobile is thriving.

I'm sure Mustang will generate its own line of Australian aftermarket mods. Possibly Camaro too if it ever comes here.

As the spread of cars purchased will be so diverse who is going to put up their hands to do the development of the mods?

Can you see a defillipo twin system for an aurion?

A kenne bell pd supercharger kit for a mazda 6?

I think the wheels places will stay in business as will the car audio places but all the serious mods which require testing and development just wont happen. There wont be communities to enjoy these mods.

Have you guys ever looked at the aftermarket stuff that happens in the USA??

Its massive and hopefully with a influx of USA products hittin oz, the aftermarket follows. Also i am sure i read some where the mustang is the most customized and modded vehicle on the planet.. hell you can get aftermarket bodykits and performance gear fitted from ford racing, roush and etc when you order from the dealership and its all covered under factory warrenty. Its gonna get better, not worst...

Change is coming... even if you dont want it... time to accept it and stop been so negitive about it all.

Seeing as how you can walk into most any auto parts store and buy performance bits for models that have been out of production for twenty or thirty years, I think people are worrying over nothing...

if the Camaro comes here,? the VF GTS is already half way there with the Camaro rear axle cradle and diff assembly fitted by HSV, the Americans told HSV the diff would not handle the the LSA engine, but the Aussies have led the way again and built a cooling system that makes it possible, !! with this technology we could have the Best Camaro's available,, anywhere, lol

Mustang mods?

Be nice if we could walk into a factory like the Shelby one outside Las Vegas and give them your cheap new Mustang and a cheque and then go back and pick up your fully modded and legal Mustang. About $12,000 for a Shelby GTS version, up to $40,000 for a 700+hp Super Snake...

Purely speculation, but I sense that the 4wd market in regard to performance modification will grow. When the falcon ute is no longer available motorists like myself will fall into the ranger market and want more out of the 3.2 diesel and other 4wd ute options. Who knows, perhaps a charger bolted up to the 4.0 petrol hilux might be the new enviable sports ute.

Allot of people don't need too keep up with the jones and will be driving Falcons for many years too come. Especially people that are performance orientated.

As long as cars exist there will be people out there who want to make it go faster, regardless of what it is.

There is already a big diesel performance following happening, who would have thought that 10 years ago?

Also TRD already did the supercharged 4L V6 Hilux.

I'm not talking about the bits you can buy and bolt on (online or not) I'm referring to the loss of OUR 2 sedans and the 'cottage manufacturing' industry behind those ENDURING cars.
We will limited to whims of marketers of that which just happens to be fashionable at the time to plug a niche.....NOTHING ENDURING.
It's about the workshops behind the shops.
