Default Aussie and Kiwi dollar merger?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-04-0...and-nz/3932830

Quote:
the Australian and New Zealand productivity commissions are seeking public feedback on the idea of having a single currency for the two countries.

The commissions have been asked to look at ways to build a closer economic relationship between the two countries.

They say there are some issues to be worked on, including changes to business reporting requirements and consumer laws.

But they also flagged the idea of having a single currency.

In a discussion paper, the commissions say there are potential benefits from the move such as lower transaction costs for businesses.

But they say there could be downsides to the idea and have pointed to the recent experience in Europe as an example.

They are seeking public feedback on the concept.
Probably a good thing for New Zealand? Dunno how good would it be for us?

From what I hear, there are more complaints than praises from the populations of a country that takes on the Euro. Greece were talking about going back to the Drachma in an attempt to help cure their financial issues.

What will happen in a NZD / AUD merger? Interesting question.....

So what happens to the value of the dollar if they are merged? The Aussie dollar is still looking good and is stronger than the NZ dollar...What happens there? We dip a bit or they do??

Keep the currency seperate. Two different countries...two different currencys. If it aint broke dont fix it!! (Although I will still keep using the occasional Kiwi 20c when I go to the shops! )

I can't see it happening.. There products would increase by 27% making harder to sell or more expensive..
We have a 3 stage economy here .. If it wasn't for mining we would be in trouble big time..Building industry is very slow in NSW.. Yet there's a housing shortage..Our tax's at work...
If they do I would benefit big time..
It's NO advantage for N.Z to have a higher dollar.. Although there $1 coin is smaller than the $2 coin...

Im all for it. Our economies and people are so closely intertwined. Heaps of kiwis live here anyway. The combined currency would go lower than what the AUD is today...which is a good thing. Hell, the flags are identical - blue, union jack, some stars.

I suspect the positives outweigh the negatives.

If ever there were 2 countries similar in virtually every respect it has to be Aust & NZ, but not sure if a currency merger or a political one, for that matter, would be beneficial.

I like the fact that when I go there to visit I can get around $1.30 for an AUD.

They trot this out every few years as well as the other ideal of making the trip to NZ a domestic flight. Only issue I see with that one is being unable to buy duty free grog

The resistance to any merger , whether it be currency , politcal or other tends to come more from the Kiwis who generally don't want to lose their identity to "big brother" and , being a veteran NZ'er coming up 50 years I can understand that line of thinking.

After having merged the currencies, they then decide to talk about merging the two rugby union sides that will be the last straw.

When they do merge the currencies, lets have a $60 note.
I want to hear the 'Ditch Hoppers' say that one on a regular basis.

There is one major cultural issue.

New Zealand has a "free will" mindset where you can do what you like and are personally responsible for any consequences whether they are good or bad. If something needs to be done they just go out and do it.

Australia has a "nanny" mindset where everyone has to be told what to do and if anything happens it is always someone else's fault and there should be compensation. If something needs to be done we just complain and complain until someone else does it and then complain that it is wrong, cost too much, was too slow or late and someone else would have done it better.

Single currency doesn't seem to be working too well in the Euro Zone at the moment.

Currencies need to be able to float against other currencies.

If we merged, it'd be like West Germany propping up East.

Not what I'd like to see happen.

So being broke would be "Haven't got a 'zac" ?

But apart from that the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps have laid down countless lives and suffered unimaginable trauma over tha last hundred or so years protecting sovereignty and preventing this sort of thing happening.

It would be beyond rude almost to abomination to use their name.

the currencys find their value on the exchange for a number of reasons, merging with NZ would include theire problems with ours and would weekend the strenght of it some what

currently our dollar is artafisialy high when it corrects (and it will) being merged would drop our dollar too far south IMHO, I accept we cant sustain our dollar being as high as it is ATM but we dont want it too low either

I didn't consider that actually. I just went with the feel of ANZAC due to the closeness of our two nations that the name implies and signifies.

So then I suppose we'll need another name, the AUNZD.

Just doesn't have the ring to it though. LOL!

The chose not to.

This is probably why they have about 10 speed cameras in the whole country and all are very obvious in black spots.

You can buy a semi auto rifle and air guns including pistols do not need a license and more security than Fort Knox.

BAC is 0.08 and you can take your kids to the pub and give them alcohol, you are responsible for their behaviour.

You can fish or hunt or jump off a bridge with a bungy or jump off a hill over a town in a hang glider or camp on the side of the road or generally just enjoy yourself and not have 100 council/govco nannies ruining your life spurred on by local wowsers.

NZ expects you to take responsibility for your own deeds and safety.

The best indication of the difference between NZ and Aus can be demonstrated by talk back radio.

In 2000 I was over there on an extended holiday.

Just before I left Australia a foreign student in Melbourne without a visa or gun license shot another person with a stolen handgun during an altercation over exams. The radio was full of "ban guns" "ban hunting" "ban shooting" etc. No one seemed to care about the criminal.

Just after I arrived a number of criminals had broken into a farm in Northland violently stealing money and property. The farmer dropped one with a 243 allowing Police to arrest the others.
The radio was full of "ban criminals" "serves them right" "should have shot them all" etc.

Now I am sure this post will anger many of our Australian members, particularly those who live in the cities who will be disgusted with this sort of attitude which is why NZ is not and never will be a state of Australia.

Australia is to NZ what the mines are to the coast........the place you go to because you need the money......

Not a fan myself, After a 8 week stint fifo in WA I enjoy the current exchange rate when I go home, about 1.30 kiwi in the Aussie dollar
Flappist iirc correctly that farmer got put away for that incident, imo the country is full of pansy do gooder lefties but at least they haven't floated the idea of banning public ANZAC day ceremonies... yet.

If you hate our country that much then why do you live here Flappy?
