Default Whats Your Average Daily Water Use?

Hi everyone, as the title suggests, the Mrs and I are wondering what everyone's average daily water use is (as stated on your water bill)

There's just the two of us living on the premises, and the bill we just got from Southeast Water (we're in Victoria) list our average daily use for this quarter at *926* litres per day. We think this is nuts, : but we're wondering what every one else uses.

We shower every day, don't water the garden, wash our cars with rain water collected in a wheelie bin, do about 3 loads of washing a week (in a AAA rated machine) and generally try our best to save water.

You may have a leaking water pipe under the house or something !Have a close listen to your taps all around the house . If there is a leak, you can usually hear it at a tap !

That sounds very high for two people , my wife and I do similar things don’t wash the car and the garden is watered from the washing machine which is AAA rated as well,

We had my sister staying with us last quarter and the three of us used 407 liters a day with 6 showers some days the washing machine and dishwasher were on every second day or so. Ours will probably increase now as we have a new baby and use the machine 2 to 3 times a day now.

A good way to check if you your property has any leaks is to read your water meter before going to bed and then check first thing in the morning if it has moved you may have a leak somewhere.

Last bill says 451l/day avg.

Family of four, each showering at least once daily :
(SWMBO and I usually twice, sometimes together : )

Family size washing loads (several times a week) plus dishwasher when its full.

Cars taken care of by a rainwater tank and the garden can fend for itself (or not)

2 adults, 3 kids under 8... 537l/day with adults showering everyday, kids bath everyday at least one load of washing every day, water garden from rainwater tanks.

Friends had over 1000l/day, 3 adults with one showering every week day at work... Contacted South East water and they said everything up to the metre was OK... Got a plumber in, he found a leaking pipe under the house... Perhaps worth some research...???

In my town gardens a banned, car washing at home banned on mains. rain water is for garden, cars, etc.
family of four at my house roughly around 550lts max. the local rag runs a water meter that is published that shows our town how much the city is using.
Coliban water even have water police to stop cheaters.
Ive herd of people filling there rain water tanks with mains water and passing it off as rain water. and alot of other ways.
coliban water have started a pipeline from the waranga system to bendigo otherwise if it doesnt rain soon the town will run out.

the capcity of the water storages for bendigo and surrounding areas is at 5-6 %.

last month we had 98mm it was the wettest may in 15 years. but we need more!

cheers, Will

That's a very high reading. My parents were away for 2 months out of the 3 month quarter once. Then got a bill that was the same or slightly just lower than their regular average.

They called the company (can't remember if it was water or power, but i'm leaning towards water) and it turns out that for whatever reason, the meter was not actually read, so they just did an average based on previous records. They were told that this was done when the meter readers had access problems etc etc, but this wasn't the case at my folks place.

A second reading was done and the bill seemed a whole lot lower all of a sudden.

We had a leaking gas pipe once and had a massive bill. They fixed it all for free and paid out the bill. I'd imagine it would be the same for water. And I'd think it would be a top priority in this current climate if it were the case of a busted pipe.

Not if the pipe is on your side of the meter it wont be done for free, by the Water company.
Even though your house is built on a slab, there will only be an area from the meter out the front, to the entry point on your house. If you have a driveway or concrete path, that could be the biggest problem if there's a leak somewhere. Because that would almost definately need to be dug up.
The only good thing, if there's a leak is that unless you have noticed water running through your ceiling, etc then the leak will be outside. As the water pipes will be run down the walls and through your ceiling.

Yeah no leaks on the inside of the house, but I cant see any evidence of leaks outside (in the front or back yards) I have a pretty good idea of where the pipes would be, reading off the plans for house. (I'm no engineer/scientest or anything tho)

I thought this was high but don't pay for water to check (I will within a few months though).

Checking at http://www.rwcc.com.au/f6.html I see that:
"Water consumption levels vary throughout Australia. Average daily water use ranges from as little as 100 litres per person in some coastal areas to more than 800 litres per person in the dry inland areas. The current average daily water consumption is 340 litres per person, or 900 litres per household. In addition, an average of 150 litres of water per person is used every day in the workplace by industry and commerce, community uses such as watering of public parks and gardens, firefighting and system leakage. "

Some other good info at that site.

We direct all roof water into 15,000 gallon tank and use as much as we like.
Would't like to be connected to town water which is mismanaged by inept councils.
If the government had an ounce of sense, every house would have a 10 - 15,000 gallon tank and the demand for town water would be miniscule.

Rain water tanks should be made mandatory for all residential property.

I have a family of 4 ( me, wife and 2 boys under 10) The boys and I shower 1 a day and the wife 2. We do the washing 2-3 times a week. and use only 380 ltrs a day, thats 95 ltrs each a day. Well under the Qld Gov 140Ltr a day. We use our water tanks for washing the dog, cars and on hte garden.

I would say you have a problem with a leak or the meter may be faulty, I have had a few friends that has had the council come out and replace theres.

Every new house in Victoria must have certain water saving devices fitted when built. i.e Rain water tanks, and grey water septic systems.

There aren't any rules with existing houses though...

That is why I said what I said. The legislation should be changed for existing houses.

We use on average about 220 litres per day for myself, wife and 11 week old daughter.

Have a water tank that takes care of the garden and washing the cars.

I found that my water bill was creeping up everytime I compared my usage to the previous months. I then started hearing noises near the laundry tap which sounded like it was running. Checked the meter and found that it was moving very slowly even though all the taps were off.

I found the leak (a pin hole in the water pipe) to be under my concrete path which I had to dig up and had it fixed. My bill then dropped from 900 litres a day to where it is now, a drop of 680 litres per day!!

I'm pretty sure I've found the leak, it seems the Toilet has slowly but surely been leaking, a small constant stream from the sistern to the bowl. I turned the toilets water off at the tap, went outside and checked the meter and its not moving. I've checked the reading throughout the day and it's been realistic relative to the use its had. We'll see what happens long term, but looks like some part of/the whole sistern has packed it in. We'll fill it manually whenever we have to flush.

I don't get a water bill ... so I do not know how much we use at home.
Seeing as I live on tank water ... water conservation is high ... and we are used to not using much water at all.

we use very little:

water with the washing machine water

kids bath in shin height water

dont flush No1's at night (only No2's cause they reek something horrid)

fill 2 water bottles for drinking water(thats 4-6 litres of water used only during the 7 hs they are awake and at home)

when it rains i head out with a bucket n soap to wash the cars over,or i use the bath water and a gerni (mainly on 4wd's as they get a tad dirty)

and the usual ones, turn taps of whilst washing hands and self then rinse off when done
anything to keep water usage down to a bare minimum, but i dont know the daily use, might check today :P

We live on tank water so very aware of water usage. We average 2 adults and 3-6 other family members in the household. So Baths are used generally for the kids and they have to share the water (if they arent to dirty), Toilets and outside taps are filled with dam water which we pump up (doesnt make for the cleanest looking toilets though), we dont water the gardens, Cars I have to say are washed with rain water though. We have 1 x 10,000 gallon tank & 2 x 5,000 and havent bought water for 18 months now which is great.
