Default Holden's New Convertible

The European-developed Tigra TwinTop is heading our way as a Holden.
It will add to Holden's convertible range rather than replace the Astra, which is expected to also become a folding hard-top in its new generation to be launched in Europe in 2005.
Power comes courtesy of the 92kW/165Nm 1.8-litre Ecotec engine laid out transverse and driving the front wheels. That unit is seen in the Barina SRi here as well as the Astra family. There’s also a 1.4-litre engine version, which comes to Australia in Barina, while a 1.3-litre common rail turbo-diesel sates the European taste for all things oil burner. No automatic transmission choice though, just a five-speed manual.

Standard ABS with brake assistance and four airbags would make up a basic safety package.
price around $33,000-$35,000 and a monthly forecast of 60-80 purchased per month.
The 1264kg kerb weight .
2 pics below, what do you think?

Nah I dont mind it,
I'm actually becoming a bit of a fan of what Vahxhal and Opel have to offer, They do create some great looking lines on their cars i reckon.

The rear roll-bar thing looks pretty useless. That would have to be a folding hardtop not a ragtop wouldn't it? Surely there is a market for a convertible like that with 4 seats even if you don't use the back very often. I think VW's approach with their new convertible is better, they made it a bit larger than the Golf so they could have 4 seats and the roof.

Those convertibles are nice but really is the market big here for them? Any figures for the Astra convertible? I'd be lucky to have seen 5 of them since they've come out

on a more serious note...look at how the Peugot 206 Cabrio sells....that'll give you an idea of the market size at the moment....Holden will need to put millions into advertising to see a decent return on it as it could slip in unnoticed

I'm not sure whether it was on sale for all of 2003 but the Astra convertible sold 2470 (and 2148 in 2002), the Peugeot 206 CC 859, Mazda MX5 540, VW Beetle 201, Renault Megane 155, not to mention Daihatsu Copen 144 and Ford Mustang 139.

Including all convertibles up to about $60k (ie also Alfa Spider, Toyota MR2, Peugeot 306/307, Smart Roadster, VW Golf and MG TF but not the Mustang) there are consistently around 5000 sales per year in total. Not a huge market but certainly worthwhile for Holden.

I don't think they have done very well with the convertable, you would think they would learn the 1st time, it's not my thing.

from the looks of it the only people who buy them are middle aged, tight arsed men who can't afford a proper convertible... those who don't want a convertible buy a statesman

I don't mind the Tigra, but I bet you it has had alot bracing and added strengthening to turn it into a slug. Like what was said on an old episode of BBC Top Gear where they were comparing the 306CC with the MeganCC - "as they sit there, they are sinking into the ground".

It's not a big market but Holden won't even get a nose in it with this ugly pile of sh*t. It'd be lucky to sell as many as the Adventra does a month

Dont forget, that by adding a holden badge it becomes 'made in australia'.
