Cortina MK1 GT rims.

hey guys

my oldman, my brother and i were looking though some stuff and we came across a set of rims. My old man said he got them off his uncle who used to own a original cortina mk1 gt back in the day. From the information i found on the net, i found that there were an option rally rim?, i have a photo here of cars with the same rim.

just wondering, how can i tell if there are genuine and how much would these fetch, im going to give them a clean but just to give you guys a picture on what they are they are pretty much the same as the mk1 GT's above. ill try and pull out a rim again and post them up asap as they are pack away

Can buy pretty much the same rim now for about $200each (google Superlite) AFAIK they weren't a factory option, but are period fitmet so are popular with the classic guys and the racers (who have to use period style rims).

If they are 14 inch, you could also get some interest from Alfa owners (105 series cars have the same 4 x 108 PCD and only a slightly different offset) btu not if they are 13 (won;t fit over alfa brakes, which are pretty big for the time)

Not worth a whole lot. You can get them brand new, mate just got some wide 14" set for his Hillman Hunter from Melbourne.

Definately not the standard Mk1 GT rim, as they used a pressed stell rim with hubcaps and the Mk2 came with Rostyle Wheels. Very common aftermarket fit though, as the 5" wide 13" rim was pretty crummy on what was a pretty quick car, they also were used a lot in racing to keep brake temps down.

they did have a magnesium wheel of the time

some of these still exist and can be found around but they are not nice looking or shiney at all

and look terrible compared to the new items you can buy

If they are period correct they will NOT be available new.

Comparing current "superlite" wheel with a genuine old magnesium minilite wheel (if that is what they are) is a bit like saying and old kingswood is the same as a new falcon...yes they have 4 wheels and a steering wheel but that's where the comparison ends.

maybe i was a little vague ,

a magnesium minlight wheel does not have the finish

even in the period when you could buy them new

of a similar wheel of this time

the finish that was on the period wheels i have seen is very 'rough' as in cast

finish and never would look like the finish on the wheels pictured

Yes I know, my post was more for the benefit of the other posters who said the potentially 30 year old wheel found in a garage is available new. If it is a genuine 30+ year old wheel I guarantee it will not be like the new ones and hence probably more sought after.

Have a look to see if there is a manufacturer's name cast into the spokes, could be Minilite or ROH Contessa rims. If Minilite magnesium wheels (likelihood is they are not) they may not be useful any more as the magnesium alloy becomes very brittle with age.
