Default sigma auto transmission problems

hey guys,
i know its not a ford but their are some cluey people here that might be able to help me.

Friends of mine bought an auto 1978 GE Chrysler sigma with an astron 2000 motor, anyway all was running fine till they painted it, then it wouldn't go in reverse but only forward. After a while it would only go in reverse but not forward.

I jacked it up and found the selector linkage was loose, tightned it up and tested with the car jacked up, all was working fine, had drive and reverse. Put it back on the ground and we only had reverse again but no drive,

any ideas

p.s. I've told them to send the car to the wreckers but they wont.

Your suggestion is probably the best option... Wreckers!

If it worked on the jack, when the car was elevated at one end, it may have low transmission fluid. Read the Manual and then check the fluid level as per the manual, if it's low, then top it up. If not, then it could be worn clutch bands or sticking valves.

Either way, it'll need a visit to an Auto Trans Specialist and I'd guess that could potentially triple that value of the car!
