Hi to all you learned and knowledgeable people....guess you all figured by now that I am on the scrounge for vital information....I woudl like to confirm the difference between the front struts on a 1.6litre MK2 and a 2L MK2. It appears that the coil springs differ but I want to know if there is a difference between the actual struts. Are the 2L struts stronger etc. I have been told they differ and we are putting a 2L into our 1.6 2 door. No doubt someone on here will have done this before and can offer some tips. All advice greatly received....Cheers Dougo

Your testing my memory here, but I thought there was a difference between early Mk2 and late Mk2 escort struts... The later ones were smaller diameter at the strut tops, and the earlier ones were larger. I actually busted one in an RS2000, and the only one we had spare was an early mk2 item, and it didn't fit. A late 1600 esky had one the right size.

Hey,
Yes there is a difference between the actual strut. The 2L is a bigger strut and takes different shockies and springs. The 2l struts have a O.D of 51mm and spring saddle I.D. of 136mm compared to 48mm O.D and 124mm spring saddle ID of the 1.6. Now there is apparently a 51mm OD 1.6 strut but it still has a spring saddle ID of 124mm but I haven't seen it. Is it going into a Mk2? If so it's easy everything bolts up if it's a Mk1 all the threads are different. You might also want to look at capri struts. Similar to the 2.0 but the tube thickness is 0.5mm thicker and lowers the ride height by 20mm. The capri tube length is also 3mm longer then the 2.0 ones but this doesn't really have any affect on anything. You will need to get different tie rod ends know as "green tie rods ends" or you can have your Capri steering arms machined to suit you tie rod ends. If you get capri struts make sure you get the hub as well because you can't get a bearing to be able to use the Mk2 hubs. Hope this helps!! Cheers |

Thanks guys for the help. It is as I suspected, interstign about the Capri struts make it lower.
Does the 2litre motor have any adverse affect on the 1.6litre front struts, ie sagging etc Cheers |

I'm not sure but I can't see it being a huge problem. Technically you might have geometry problems but for a road car I wouldn't think it would matter, how ever I can't be 100% sure as I've only converted my 1.6 to to a pinto using 2.0 struts.
