Default MB cabin / pollen filter replacement for the 1st time!

Looks like someone designed the HVAC then another team did the electrical system. Might be easier on a LH drive Mondeo.

I followed the Haynes manual, but it was still very fiddly even after removing the glovebox as a number of cables get in the way. Looking on line, some say to completely remove the fuse module, or whatever it's called. Others suggest just unplugging 2 cables on the RH side, then moving it out of the way.

I suspect that you could leave the glovebox in place if the fuse module was removed.

I bought the Ford filter as it has a charcoal layer. The air definitely smells cleaner in city traffic. I did laugh at some of the before and after pics on the web showing a clean white filter and the "dirty" original!

It was interesting to see that the mechanic who did the job last time had trouble with the plastic screw fitting on the felt cover. They just unclipped it from the plastic trim panel, but didn't put it back. I've found that you have to but upward pressure on those fittings as you remove the screw, otherwise it never comes out.

Not the best design for sure.
Take care when handling the GEM, it's always powered and isn't just a fuse module as can be seen from this list of functions from the manual:

Battery saving function
Current distribution
Exterior lighting (except the adaptive front lighting function on vehicles with dynamic cornering lights)
Interior lighting
Wiper system
Washer fluid level indicator
Window heating (heated windshield, heated rear window, heated exterior mirrors)
Speed control system (reads the speed control switches and transmits signals on the CAN bus)
Locking / Unlocking
Anti-theft
Air conditioning controls (partial)
Handbrake (it monitors the switch and transmits the signal on the CAN bus)
Monitoring of the brake fluid level.
Fuel pump (vehicles with 1.6L, 2.0L and 2.3L engine)
Fuel level indicator
Battery charging (smart charge, partially)
Electric booster heater
Detection of the accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor
Detection of the clutch pedal switch
Detection of the clutch pedal position (CPP sensor)
Brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
Tire pressure monitoring system
Communications via the high speed CAN bus (HS-CAN) and mid-speed CAN bus (MS-CAN)
Main module in the LIN bus system
PATS (interface for transceiver)
Clock control

Yes, there is obviously a lot going on in there! The metal clip that holds the front made me a little nervous when I was manoeuvering it for access to the filter, so I'll cover that in tape next time. Might even play it safe and disconnect the battery.

The old filter had done just under 40,000 km but it's hard to tell how dirty it was. The new one definitely removes odours more effectively.

I had another look before throwing it out. It had been fitted backwards, and was quite dirty when I looked at the other side! Nice one South Auckland Motors, not that I suppose it matters.

Yes there's an arrow on it. Don't know how it matters. Maybe skip replacement as time is money?

I finally reinstalled the glove box today after the Christmas rush. Intrigued by the cable that plugs into a socket with no connectors or wires. Weird.

I read that the blank socket is for a passenger side air bag deactivation switch:
