The new camera technology employed by Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) works in all weather conditions, day and night, and up to speeds of 300km/h.
Good thing I bought a new car with a claimed top speed of 307 km/h then!

Typical of Oz lawmaking, all stick and no carrot.
I have far more concern about the perceptive skills and rash judgements generally of motorists milling about me, than whether they’re on the dog-and-bone. Yes, I think being unable to leave a phone untouched is a character weakness and poor judgement but the equipment and laws are not going to stop tailgating, dropping in, brake testing, illegal turns and dangerous overtaking. |

That takes active policing, this is passive policing and therefore the profit ratio is a lot higher as it's just a camera and software and fines being dished out.

I don,t have a real problem with people on the phone whilst driving, whether hand held or handsfree, because really its not much different to talking to passengers. What I do have issue with is texting whilst drivng. If I was doing the penalties the phone talking wouldn,t be very high BUT the penalty for texting would be 7 days suspension and $1000 fine for 1st offence.2nd offence would be 3 months loss of licence and $3000 fine.

Come back here again and say you don't mind people driving with their phone in hand when some some A** H*** hits your vehicle while talking on the phone while driving. FFS bluetooth tech is so common no need to hold phone while talking. |

I love it, more of it. Some might call it cash grab, not me, should grab their phones too.
These self absorbed selfish prats yakking on their phone not concentrating. Most common things are taking too long for the green arrow and running up the back of someone. Had a couple of close calls with these narcissistic dim wits nearly hitting me, just a matter of time before I get tagged by one I guess. This is also driving up our insurance costs. GET OFF THE PHONE OR GET OFF THE ROAD TOSSER.

Talking on your phone is one thing, looking down at your phone very 3 seconds is completely different.
People probably think they’re being sneaky when doing, but trust me you’re not. You stand out very easily. |

Texting while driving is ridiculous
Talking on a phone would certainly be distracting, but perhaps not as much as texting, since don't need to be looking at screen or keypad Talking on a CB radio while driving would be equally distracting as talking on a phone, assuming had to hold onto the microphone, change channels etc.. Not sure where police radios fall - perhaps they have special attention training that allows them to concentrate on two separate tasks at the same time - i.e. driving and operating radio? Or maybe their radios are hands free now? |

No amount of rules or fines will make people put down their phones,
I'm convinced that it's addictive behavior and we're teaching it to our kids. |

You got that right, even the pedestrians don't look where they going. Mobile phones are the new scourge of society, I know of dicks who cannot go for a day without them. |

Pretty fair chance that the driver who tailgated you would have done so whether using a handheld or handsfree phone. It wasn,t holding a phone, but rather distraction and loss of attention that was the cause of the crash

Re: Mobile phone detecting cameras
Good! Turn drivers who use them into pedestrians. Zero tolerance

Sorry bud no use speculating when you were not present at my accident to comment. By the way no tailgating involved, don't know why you stated that! |

So Tell me what the difference is between touching your inbuilt factory GPS whilst driving
And touching your mounted phone GPS whilst driving ? Other than the fine ! I have no issue with fining idiots that have a phone in their hand whilst driving , texting talking etc , but zero tolerance to "touching" a phone whilst driving is going a bit too far imo

The thing is it's not illegal to use a radio, but a phone is. Besides Police are mostly 2 up and the passenger uses the radio.

Sorry didn,t read your story properly re tailgating. The point I was making was it probably wouldn,t make any difference whether on a hand held or hands free phone. Also it wasn,t an accident,it was a crash. There are very few accidents, most are crashes caused by some one elses inattention and/ or stupidity

The sooner they roll them out the better. Zero tolerance from me.
The one I see quite often is when I'm driving to work in the early hours is people have with their phones strapped high up on the dash or worse still suction capped to the windscreen under the rear view mirror. The illumination lights the whole cabin and radiates from the car, so much so can see the whites of their eyes and the blackheads on their noses. This has got to impede their driving as much as touching the phone.

Actually in NSW police have an exemption for the talking on a hand held phone while driving. As many of their matters are sensitive and can’t be discussed on a radio channel

Maybe its me but I'm convinced there seems to be more accidents involving new cars than old.....maybe its all the screens, electronic bells, whistles which distract and the notion drivers think they are more invincible in a newer car taking bigger risks.
