Ahahaha. I have a series one Fairmont, bought it at 157 000, now at 283 000. Only thing that I had to replace was 2 brake switches, a set of rotors, and two tranny services, the rest has been general maintenance.

I'm still on my first (10 years old) and had no big issues with it just the normal maintenance stuff.

have replaced a water pump, shocks and springs and steering rack in 12 months of ownership- the rest was done for what I wanted wasnt needed. Most reliable car i have owned so far. Has done around 30 runs at the drags, and day to day commuting.
220k on the clock!- love it!!

You need to strengthen the plate on the firewall. I have seen some weld or bolt on a section of 5mm steel plate - seems to do the trick.

Plus parts are dirt cheap. All I have done with my car is change the shockers...other than that its dead stock :

Nothing wrong with AU's - I racked up about 500,000 in them and never really had an issue.... except for that one wombat.
