I am interested in hearing other peoples thoughts on whether we should get a Focus, Corolla or something else. I think she prefers the look of the Focus but every man and his dog seems to recommend the Corolla for countless reasons. We are still considering other options too but mainly limiting the search to 5 door (4 door hatch) varieties.

"New" meaning dealership new?
Or new meaning "Newish" 15 grand new, well you will need to look at the Koreans, ie a Rio, Getz etc up to 1.5L Newish.... you will find a ton of cars 2-3 years old for 15 grand. Corolla will always be a safe bet due to predictable build quality and resale. Reading up on the reviews found on many car websites to help you decide will also help. |

Corolla certainly has reliability, but the Focus is a more inspiring drive. The Focus is a well built quality car, but still doesn't get the great reputation that the Corolla gets. The problem is, because a Corolla is a Toyota, it is basically guaranteed to get a good reputation. If you simply want to get from A to B, the Corolla would be fine, but if you want a bit of extra style and enjoyment, the Focus is the way to go. I think you'll be very happy with a Focus. I'd choose one over a Corolla any day.

If you'd be happy with something Korean get a Corolla instead, don't rule out the Wagon. Focus is more of a enjoyable car, shop it against Golf and Peugeot 307 or Subaru Impreza and Forrester, or Mazda3.
Peugeot 307 Wagon is a stunner, Forrester GT fast practical fun, Golf will feel the same after 250,000 kms as new. Mazda3 is nice, little bit noiser on the highway than Focus, but certainly liveable. |

Next to nothing brand new under $15,000 that is a 4 door, I've looked. Heck, even 2 year old Echos are going for that much here. I've had to up the price limit slightly and may end up in a Tiida sedan.

Yeh sorry guys. I did mean a newish used car. Anything from 2003 or newer with less than 50000 kms would hit the spot.
