Default Diesel wagon

Drive.com.au have said the diesel Mondeo wagon is on the way:

If it was auto I'd consider it. Mazda are making a mistake in only offering the manual.
My partner doesn't drive manuals too well. A clutch in a 205 GTi was wallet draining, so we now drive autos.

The article says it will be a 2.2L diesel. Does that mean the Mondie diesel is up for an update? We are very interested in a Mazda 6 diesel wagon, but if the Mondie gets a 2.2 we might hold off for a bit longer.

The 2.2 is one of 3 diesel options available in Europe. But the 2.2 is manual only as it has too much torque (!) for the 6-speed auto.

Theres a 6 speed in the Falcon, cann't see why it cann't work on the Mondeo 2.2 ?

Different transmissions (ZF in falcon, Aisin in Mondeo) so whilst there are certainly 6 speeders that can handle the torque, fitting one to the Mondeo would be a large task. Hadn't realised there was no auto on the 2.2. This is quite disappointing as Ford have an advantage in offering auto on their diesel (as opposed to Mazda6) and the 2.2 looks a ripper.

Interestingly, I'm reasonably sure that the diesel Mondeo is torque limited in the first 2 gears (tested purely by the seat of my pants!) as I feel my TDCi has just a little more go once in third. Could be wrong.....

Ford is at the head of the pack when it comes to diesels. Its excellent selection of TDCi engines already covers all the bases, as it includes 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0-litre units – and now the range has been boosted by a revised ver**sion of the powerful 2.2-litre.

The new powerplant goes on sale this month and appears in the S-MAX and Galaxy people carriers, as well as the acclaimed Mondeo. The engine will also interest hot hatch fans, too, as it could even find its way under the bonnet of the recently face**lifted Focus, as Ford looks to com**pete with SEAT’s oil-burning Leon FR.

The big question is, does the latest diesel maintain the reputation of the firm’s pre**vious TDCi powerplants? These engines can rightly claim to have transformed Ford’s reputation – before the original 1.8-litre version was introduced in the first-generation Focus, the blue oval sat very firmly at the bottom of the oil-burning pile. So the newcomer has a lot to live up to.

It certainly gets off to a good start, producing 173bhp and a superb 400Nm of torque. Those figures are up 20bhp and 40Nm respectively on the outgoing 2.2-litre, and provide the Mondeo with excellent straight-line performance. The engine debuts in a fresh flagship for the range, badged the Titanium X Sport (see Page 17), but Zetec and Titanium X models will also be made available. In five-door guise, it completes the sprint from 0-60mph in 8.4 seconds on the way to a 139mph top speed.

In-gear performance is even more impressive thanks to the engine’s overboost facility, which increases the maximum torque output to 420Nm for short periods under full throttle. The Mondeo is already renowned as the best-driving car in its class, and the new diesel shows its worth by providing impressive pace to go along with its agile handling.

Importantly, the 2.2-litre is smooth and refined, and economy hasn’t suffered, either. The unit is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and is capable of returning 45.6mpg.

What’s more, it emits only 165g/km of CO2. That places the flagship diesel in road tax band D, which will make it a popular choice with business users and private buyers alike.

When it comes to equipment, the Titanium X has got just about everything you’ll need. A six-disc in-dash CD autochanger, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, automatic headlamps and dual-zone climate control all feature on the car’s generous standard equipment list.

Ford’s gutsy five-cylinder petrol engine is also availble in the Mondeo, but the superior economy and strong performance of the 2.2 TDCi make the diesel a more sensible alternative for enthusiastic drivers.

You'd have to think that the diesel will be the same $3K over the petrol. The Titanium hatch goes for anything from $46-$50K, so you'd have to think it would he about that much if not slightly more.

Will be intersting to see what the pricing will be.

imagine a Mondeo with the 2.2 (effectively the same as the Maz6, with the DSG...... that would be an awesome engine in the Mondeo/Focus XR TDI/ Territory / Falcon.... :P :

So going from 2.0L to 2.2L if my maths is correct that's 200cc will force Ford to place a manual gearbox into the Mondeo instead of an auto...... if that's the case there goes my upgrade yeh I know TORQUE but gee guys nothing is impossible my guess its the pedal to the floor at traffic lights is the auto concerns then if that's the case limit the torque until 1500RPM on take off!!

I doubt they will bring the wagon out as a manual. They don't have a diesel manual now, and I'd reckon they would sell more autos.

I won't be buying a manual, and that's why Mazda and Subaru are off the list.

I dont think we'll see another manual mondeo, that's one of the reasons put forward for the XR5 finishing up. No auto option.

So beef up the existing auto shifter or transplant one into the Mondeo, or a totally new box especially made for the 2.2L engine with future increases built into the auto!

The new dual clutch 6 speed will handle the torque from the 2.2, so I'd expect to see this powertrain in the facelift Mondeo.
