Question Traction Control

Ok people need some help , my AU fairmont V8 doesnt have IRS nor does it have traction control , thus lies the problem , the missus is scared to drive it in the wet even with brand new boots on it. Question is i can purchase the traction control unit but will it go on this car with the current config , V8,Auto,non IRS...??? And how hard are they to put in.. thanks people.

Shouldn't be a problem unless she can't help stomping on the GO pedal!

From what I know the traction control is all hooked in to the ECU and there is no additional plug in type solution. Can it be done, course it can with some serious $$$ and time...is it worth it? No!

Just take it easy! If its possible to handle a manual TE50 in the rain...a fairmont with no IRS and a single spinner should be a dream!

Its not a single spinner , an it sure as hell aint standard motor wise , you tramp it in the dry an they fry, this thing has an awesome amount of torque . Ive had a new V8 Fairmont GHIA with IRS an all the goodies but this to that is chalk an cheese , its got Cross drilled ventilated twin piston Tickford , Tickford suspension , wheels and full body kit in that Fantastic blue that changes in color with the light. All tickford parts are Complianced on a plate under the bonnet near the Radiator bottle on left side.

if you think that's a traction control unit then you need to think again....it's an abs module, the traction control is done by the ecu, not the brakes....it restricts torque output to stop wheelspin...not sure about the au's, but i think in the ba's they also use the rear brakes at low speed

If it's not single spinner, is it at least LSD?

You know there's no difference between a V8 in a Tickford equipped Fairmont, and the V8 in a base model Forte? They are all the same, except if it has had any after market work done to it.

Even then, it's all a matter of throttle control, and if your missus doesn't know how to change the pressure on the throttle, then maybe she shouldn't be on the road at all.

A cheaper and easier alternative to trying to go down this path would be to get a decent set of tyres.

Sounds like she's one of those "OH NO IT'S A V8, I CAN'T DRIVE THAT" women.. No offence intended. My point is that you can't convince one of those women that it's all OK and that driving sedately in one machine is much like driving sedately in another. Even if you convince them to get behind the wheel they'll also be so nervous as to force an accident at one point or another.

Matt.

Point taken but she used to drive my 72 XA Fairmont which had a 400 clevo with weiand intake an 1080 Dom an kitted FMX , she knows how to drive. And as far as tires go ive worked at a tire service for awhile so ive a fair idea on whats good an not so good. Its just 1 them cars i suppose , i never said anything about the motor being tickford its just a rocket compaired to my Ghia. This one you touch the throttle down 1/4 inch an it wants to let loose tried to adjust the tension an have sum give in the cable to no avail. anyway its an AU an a V8 an goes like hell so i shouldnt whinge , better than havin a slug....

how about getting her an advanced driving lesson instead?
or send her on a Rally day or something so she can learn to control a car when it doesnt want to be controlled.

I really can't see why wheelspin can't be controlled. The best traction control unit is the drivers right foot and if my mrs can drive my XR in all conditions (yes people I do let her drive it lol) then I can't see why your mrs would be scared of your 'mont.

wrong the traction control is done in the ABS unit i just feed the signal to the ECU to shut the injectors down all the thinking for traction is done in this unit just check the wiring diagram in a workshop manual

Only Ghias S1,2,3 and T1/2 cars fitted with Autos had it. Not to sure about T3 though.
Fairmonts were never fitted with T/C.
I think it is a PITA anyway if you do have to take off in a rush an T/C is on you aint going anywhere, well that in my TE anyway. Ive found that driving with it on the car is feels abit 'breathless' soon as its off its a compleletly different car.

T1 TE (S1 Fairmont based) missed out on T/C aswell. Don't think it was even an optional extra.
