How much to I love Australia?
I appreciate freedom, I appreciate safety, and I appreciate the fact that I have food on my table every night, and have clean water to drink. I also don't litter. People wearing tracksuits and dressing up doesn't mean a thing. I see people wearing their flag capes who act like idiots, throw their garbage all over the place and then say that 'love' Australia. You don't have to dress up to love your country.

When I lived overseas, I had the boxing kangaroo and the Australian flag flying proudly in my lounge room, when in the Aussie consulate in San Fran first thing I did was touch the Aussie flag, then kiss it....

Although... I love having a bill of rights. A legal system “Speed cameras” that find you guilty before being proven innocent. Where paedophiles can be given suspended sentences. Where big business dictates to government how they want the system run. Where someone who rapes and murders a woman gets less jail time than someone who rips off the tax office. Where a state government can virtually steal your land of you by rezoning it and imposing a $90,000 a hectare levy on the sale forcing you to sell it to a greedy developer for less that what your tax bill would be. Where exotic cars that are safe enough for German Autobahns are not considered safe to use here under Australian design rules. Where someone who abuses an animal can be given a jail sentence but someone who abuses a child is given counselling. Where a federal government imposes an Alcopops tax that makes a legal drink more expensive than illegal drugs. Where building workers lose the right to silence when they appear before the ABCC. Where truck drivers by law must surrender documents to authorities that may incriminate themselves, yet no other citizens are required to do this. Where civil liberties are being eroded with “anti gang laws” that are supposed to be for bike gangs but will eventually be used on any group the government doesn’t like. Where a citizen can get five years in prison for refusing to cooperate with ASIO on a questioning warrant, even if not suspected of an offence. Where the federal government wants to censor the internet so citizens can’t dig up sensitive information about them, sorry, so our kids are protected from the dangers of pornography. Where asylums seekers are given detention and are treated better than some of our returned serviceman. I could go on but it doesn’t matter. I love Australia and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, however, it isn’t perfect here.

I love Australia because being Australian isnt a race or religion. A quick survey of me and 4 friends on a recent trip to heathcote showed that all of us had at least one parent born overseas, and they were all different countrys.

I came here in 2006 with my wife, and we really fell in love with this country (we chose it over UK and USA), now we're applying for permanent residency and let me tell you it's not easy. Australia is a very attractive country and has a selection system in place making sure only the best people can come here to live permanently. By the way, our neighbour is a true Aussie, he's a truckie and drives this big tipping truck (we call it his UTE) and parks it in front of his house, one day we saw him take it to the local shopping centre to get fish and chips for his family- he took 5 parking spaces

I find I love my country more when I'm away (4 days tops). Then I get into Sydney Airport, drive home and after negotiating some of the crap roads, bad drivers and congestion begin to whinge about it again.

You could add Australia: A place that welcomes people ("REFUGEES - Yeah right") arriving by boat or plane or any other method who are too gutless to fight in their own countries but expect Aussie soldiers to go fight their wars; A so called democracy that allows/compels people to vote in PENCIL A so called democracy that allows people to vote more than once just by quoting a name. No ID Required. A place that allows non Australians to vote The list goes on Its not perfect but its the best country that I know of If only we could force RG and my Dad to eat vegemite |

Fair nuff about questioning who is and who isnt a genuine refugee, and even if they are, what responsibility does Australia have to rehabilitate them, but what war is Australia fighting for these ppl? Only wars Australia is involved in atm are ones the US wanted them to be involved in, and none of them had anything to do with 'fighting for gutless people who wont fight for their country' more importantly, I wasnt aware non-australians could vote. I got Permanent Residency(even then it was for 2 years-kind of like probationary period at work), during which time I wasnt allowed to vote, but once they checked up things AGAIN, and saw I had done nothing illegal in this duration, then I was given Australian Citizenship, and eventually Passport. N only now can I vote. At no point while on any other kind of visa was I allowed to vote. So yeah genuinely interested as to what group/groups of ppl are allowed to vote before actually becoming citizens. Unless you mean something else.... |

X2 But I would add on the refugee thing; Australia, where its people are second class to economic refugees; where we can't afford to look after the elderly or the homeless but can afford to look after a new arrival afghani, his 8 wives and 35 children.
