For outright speed, there is no benefit of having electrification of any sort. Just adds weight. Electrification plugs torque gaps in ICE engines. Zero benefit for outright high speed runs.

Good point, its just refreshing although the Veyron is in a similar boat.

Cant find much on how many cars they actually make. To me a "production car" needs a production line. The only info I can see is 24 cars made 2006-2007. 1 car a month....... Only just a bit more than a kit car. The Veyron is a real production car compared to this. Anyone can put a twin turbo LS on a rollerskate and make it fast........I would love one though.

Just 100 of the insane $2.2m road cars will be built. And if you want the high-downforce Track Pack, the price rises to $2.7m ($US1.9m).

Not sure on how many Veyrons are made?

I would love to know what tyres they are using. In previous high speed cars the tyres were always a limiting factor.

Actually, the 508.73 kms/hr is the average against two runs they did. One was 47X.XX kms/hr and the 532.XX run. To get the record, the car has to go both ways over the stretch of road.

Yeah the telling point is in the language - How many Veyrons have been made v how many SSC will make.........or not make.

SSC released an electric model, never actually made one, it was cancelled.

The only info I can find is that initial build rate of 24 in the first two years.

450 Veyrons made at a base price of close on AU$4,000,000
250 Chirons made so far

At AU$3,000,000, when you look at what you get, engineering/tech/backing it makes the Veyron look like an absolute bargain. Never thought I would say that!

Imagine if you had one of these running alongside a TGV train at it's top speed of about 575 kmh. First run was 530 odd kmh so not all that far off the TGV in this clip from years ago ..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOdATLzRGHc..

The clip gives a pretty good idea of who fast 500 plus is at ground level I think .

thats a great TGV video, have seen it before, still, those end clips of the fly pasts are incredible! Shame its not in higher quality. I have been in TGVs at 300 which is their normal cruising speed, and thats also already fast! I find it fun, kind of, when you are at the window and another TGV at 300 passes! BANG, massive train flashes by in a, well flash! 600kmh closing speed.

Driver said it picked up near 30kph in the last 5 or so seconds before he backed off. Says there’s more in it, but the crosswinds were unhelpful.

Out of curiosity I wonder is there a terminal speed where serious downforce becomes essential to keep wheels grounded .

I guess all sorts of variables come into play . Some production motor bikes see 320 kmh or so too and it's intriguing how they stay reasonably safe without airfoil type wings like cars do .

remember this ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXZaAuyuYmQ..

crazy ........

This speed and add another 180 kmh

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LopMoV5ahqg ..

It's ridiculous ..

This is an interesting read also on the subject of fastest cars .

https://www.spnbe.com/top-13-fastest...world-in-2020/

I remember seeing a bit about the Koenigsegg Agera a while back . In here it says that it's 0-400 kmh time is about 24 seconds ..

On that car it's only a 5 litre V8 engine too and it has a bit of a link in design on the Ford 5.0 V8 too ... https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cul...segg-ford-v-8/

Interesting stuff .

A fair bit of controversy about this at the moment. See video here https://youtu.be/3daTG4_JS_4

Apparently the video doesn't add up, the tyres are being pushed beyond limits and the gear ratio wouldn't allow the stated top speed (apparently top speed was achieved in 6th gear). There's also several other videos that show the maths doesn't add up.

It's going to be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I've been looking at these videos, need to take a good 100km/h off the top speed it seems!

The tyres were the thing that got me intrigued. I know Bugatti were extremely concerned with tyres exploding during their high speed testing. They would not run them at top speeds for any more than a small amount of time. And the Bugatti had tyres custom made by Michelin specifically for that car.

Yet this car is reportedly running much higher speeds on stock Sport Cup 2's?

Dewetron, the company who makes the GPS that was used to record the speed released a statement that they were not present for the run and they have not approved or validated the data.

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/dew...-tuataras-run/

For a car worth so much and to make a big claim like they have, I'm not sure why they wouldn't have it verified by professionals and also use an additional unit such as a VBOX for consistency and accuracy.

It's looking more and more likely it was wrong. 450kph looks more accurate.

Looks like SSC want to redo the run and somewhat acknowledge the numbers don't add up.

I'm perplexed that anyone's buying the explanation. It's kinda like building a yacht and not knowing what size sail it needs. How can they not know what the max speed in each gear is?

How are the speed figures on the dash created? Via connection to the drive train or via GPS?

I've fooled around with my phone GPS while on bullet trains in Japan and Korea and they have been pretty accurate.

Did the same when I had a window seat on the plane. Was able to get a reading that matched the displayed speed on the screen.

Would really like to know how they can get such a large discrepancy...
