Had some free time and decided to look into something....
The above is what YOU allow FB / Messenger to do by installing on your mobile device. Read over it carefully.... The above two apps pretty much have full remote access to your device. Sorry, but no more. Both Gonski! This answers a whole lot of questions that bothered many of us for a while: * I don't recall using that much data!?! * How is the tradie I called a month ago for a quote suddenly on my 'suggested friends' list?!? * How can the advertising seem to hone in on things I have just spoken / texted / googled about?!? * etc etc etc... God.. what an eye opener. Now I have near 400mb of free space to use for other, more important things. Other apps my be similar I'm sure!

I fully agree that it has gotten way out of hand when just accepting terms and conditions without properly agreeing. Its a worry what can be seen by the apps on phones. I have recently just ditched using a smartphone and gone and bought an old style phone with proper actually buttons and no wifi or apps or none of that stuff basic to use but can send txts and make calls just like anything else.
Its good to know I am not being spied on through the camera, not having my txts read by some unknown person, not having my contact details taken, not having mobile banking apps that can trick you into giving away banking details, and its good to know that my whereabouts are not being tracked from the other side of the planet. |

I actually don't use either apps but to be honest, even if I did neither of the above would really stop me.
Just to play devils advocate here - So what if they know the above info? So they can track me via GPS? They will see me going to work, out to dinner, back home, to a friends place... again, what are they going to care about any of that? Targeted ads? Well I'd rather see ads for things I actually search than things I've never searched and have no desire to ever buy. Read my SMS? They will find out that I texted my wife with a dinner request. That I texted a mate a stupid photo. etc. With any of the info they gather from me, what should I worry about? |

The targeted ads sh#t me, my daughter will google dance moms or ballet shoes, and that's all I see for the next week. Whoever invented all of this must be male cos they don't provide targeted ads from p#%n history. Even more scary is my phone knows where im going. I get in and out of my car 30 times a day. Every time I get in and the phone connects to Bluetooth, I get a screen pop up telling me how many minutes/traffic report back to my office between 10am and 3 pm, after 3 pm it gives me the traffic back to home.

Can this stuff be used against us down the track? How long (if not already?) before this data can be requested legally? How soon will it be where we must agree to allow insurance / police / medical / government etc access to this data to perhaps use for their benefit? Software is programmed by people. People make mistakes and can be corrupted... Who are these faceless people? What are they doing with this info? What profit can they make by selling this info to the highest bidder? What rules are they abiding by? I'm not saying you are wrong or right - just my thoughts out loud. Look at Wikileaks - that Law firm in Panama(??) that released the financial affairs of world leaders and the elite. This stuff has toppled governments and put many into question. FB and messenger have access to near 15% of the worlds mobile devices! All it takes is one mistake, or one disgruntled employee...

I am guessing for people that have stuff to hide this might be a worry. On the other hand I can see how it is an invasion of privacy of sorts but what can we do?? We are on camera everywhere, we get paid into our bank account, we pay for stuff with cards etc etc if they wanted to track you it would almost be impossible to avoid it, they know where you fill your car up, they can pull the CCTV footage from the servo to see who you were with, they know what you buy, where and when you buy it and who you are with, how much you get paid, how you spend it, how much etc etc...

I think along the lines of if people from Facebook are spying on me through my phone camera, or reading my text messages, they are going to be very bored and disappointed. Plus there must be something seriously wrong with the world if they care about my info over more important issues.

Woolies knows when I've shopped there even if I haven't scanned my woollies card, which I only do of they have a good sale on. I'll go buy milk or something and the next day or so I'll get an email thanking me for shopping with them and asking for feedback.

I tried warning the missus and kids. They shrug it off, because, you know, like, everyone's doing it.
Just be sure to leave my details out of it and no more posting pics of our youngest. Poor kid, whats in store for him. |

The most concerning thing about all this is the number of people who happily give up all their privacy rights to third partys simply because they 'don't have anything to hide' - it shows a very poor grasp of the concept of civil liberty and the right to privacy.
The endgame here is that with so many people voluntarily throwing away their right to privacy, it's just a small step to government legislating the rest of your privacy away. Once it's gone, it's too late to go back. If reading this is prompting thoughts along the lines of 'if you've got nothing to hide you have nothing to fear blah blah' please don't bother replying - you're one of the ones who doesn't understand this stuff at the level that you really should, and you'd only be proving your ignorance. But if you really must state that rubbish, then put your full name to it - because you have nothing to hide, right? I can guess how many people will actually do that...

The terms and conditions may say this hat and the other thing but you can change he settings on your phone to makensurebtheybdont have access to this stuff. It's pretty easy but as most people do is just op for the easiest and quickest way to setup accounts.
Also one thing that many people don't know,!if you have the option on the phone to hunt for open wifi spots when out and about, companies will use this to connect to your phone to get data, you won't be able to use any wifi but they at collecting data. |

It is crazy, i have a massive web presence because of my job, which i have zero choice about. Because of some current risks i tried to get any references to my wife being associated with me off the internet. I spent two days deleting certain things, not just facebook. Even after spending a solid 16 hours it only took me about 30 minutes to connect my wifes name with me. Made me realise how much the internet sucks up and makes it easy to connect a whole network of people to each other.
I wont go into detail here BUT some of this stuff can literally mean the security of your family is compromised should someone want to do something. |

I got a phone call, got there and was very, very, very, very ****ed off. A tow truck driver there later posted about it on FaceBook. He lied and exaggerated, making me look bad. This got the whole redneck response, including one person posting my home address on there.

The online world is advancing in leaps and bounds - with slow to react laws. The technology is there to trace and identify perpetrators of online crime yet we have a system of protecting the criminals and making the victims go through hell. How many lives have been ruined by online sabotage be it personal attacks, intimidation, trolling, bullying, stalking and the spreading of untruths? Look at the deaths that the above has caused.... Someone calls you and abuses you, it's you that has to change your number. I bet if it was an online attack the first course of action is for you to remove yourself from your online presence. And it shouldn't be like that....

Never had them never will to anti social to the people that you are actually with ,
too many times seen people send irrelevant stuff or ask questions to the person sitting next to them or in the next room how hard is it to use your voice or get up and walk 10 meters .

If people are paranoid stop using the internet. Google are no better...they gather data and sell it off.

If you look at the engineering and money put into this 'Web 2.0 Bubble - Social Media' and the valuations of all the tech companies, and realised that this is the outcome... that effort could have put manned missions on Mars by now... D'oh!

Don't use your real details, don't post real photos of yourself. Treat the Internet like a fictional fantasyland where nothing is real or trustworthy. The Internet is a zoo, you never know who or what could use your identity for their purposes.

Please advise me how to NOT use SOME real details (eg computer internet address) when posting emails, signing up to Facebook, Google and Yahoo. I would love to be able to do that.
Just ask yourself why Microsoft purchased Skype and was in such a hurry to get users of W7 (with the sneaky change to reverse question on the upgrade). My guess its catchup that puts them firmly into the information gathering/selling game competing with Google et al. Thats where all the money is for the these companies. Their product sales are probably just a sideline. Who is these companies biggest customer? And why does Facebook's Mark Zuccerberhg(sp?) put tape over the webcam mounted in the rim of his computer display? Maybe I should put some over the selfie camera on my mobile phone Oops, starting to rant. Sorry I have no evidence for these statements. And yes I know I am paranoid! Don't get me started on credit reporting agencies. I will probably regret this post! And I have nothing to hide! And no-way will I name myself. |
