Default Cleveland into Capri

Hey guys,

I just purchased a 69 4 cyl Capri and a CRS Chassis. I have a stout Cleveland and a Toploader lying around gathering dust so its obvious what I want to do. I have a couple of questions; has anyone done this swap in Qld? What booster and master cyl should I use to get rocker cover clearance? There seems to be ample room for extractors, are there any off the shelf that are a close fit? What radiator is the best fit? I have heard early commodore is close and finally, can the cable clutch set up be used or do I need to convert to hydraulic. Any help muchly appreciated.

I don't think its legal to do in qld anymore. But if that doesn't worry you, its not too hard. I was doing one on a te corty and a mate was putting a BBF in a capri, and that would fit better width wise. How much room do you have from firewall to radiator support? I'm pretty sure you don't have to cut the firewall, can't remember tho.

For a radiator i'd just get PWR to make the biggest 2 core you can fit. Are you running a belt driven water pump or electric?

Custom headers would be a must, and I don't think you have to go thru the fenders. I think you have to use a rear mount sump like my corty. Bronco sumps work, but I'd spend the money on a high energy for the application, not much dearer than a bronco either!


Are you using the Castlemain Rod Shop conversion kit? The one I bought for my corty was rubbish. The motor sat on a lean to the left, and way to much of a slope to the rear, also sat on a slight diagonal, and had to slot every bolt hole. Rung them up about this and they weren't interested. Would never use one again.

For a booster/master set up, I used a Hopper Stoppers front brake kit, XC 1" master or whatever they recommended, and was using a remote mount booster for the front only, I think they are a PBR VF44, and I'm sure you run a separate one for the rears if you want one. Hopper Stoppers should be able to help you out with all of this.

Thanks guys. I will ring an engineer and see if it can be done. If not i will just do a standard resto. Its only a four banger but its a matching numbers GT so it would still be a nice car to have.

my first car was a 1600GT, great car to restore, great fun to drive, but do lack the power of a V8 capri - lol

(even made it into Performance 4's & rotary's)

2 completely different schools here - save the original car if all the numbers match or go the full modifications with the V8

I doubt you will get a consensus :

Length and width wise there is plenty of room for a clevo in the capri engine bay. I use a gemini booster with std master cylinder. An xb master cykinder can also be used.
The radiator I have is a wb holden core with hose outlets to suit the clevo.
I choped up a genuine 2000gt xlr, some people werent to happy with me for doing that. But Its how I want a capri to be!

My first car was also a 1600GT Cari - I started with a 2.0 L OHC Corty motor, which was a great fit, but then got restless and fitted a 302W & C4. The starter motor only just missed the steering column, but wasn't too much of an issue with some creative wiring. Standard manifolds fitted fine, though extractors XY or XA/B extractors would be fine as they sit in closer to the block than standard manifolds.

I used a radiator out of a VH Commodore which had an oil cooler in it, and side tanks so it would clear the front of the bonnet. It fitted fine but I had to cut out the standard radiator mounts and widen the air hole, and fit in in front of the metal inner radiator mounting shrouds rather than behind (you'll know what I mean if you've got a Capri.

This was done 20 years and many beers ago. Happy memories...

I have a capri also I have spoken to an engineer in nsw and I know you can engineer a windsor but not a clevo as I had the same plans things may be different in qld but I doubt it

Been trying to get onto a local engineer who may be able to help. I dont see why a Windsor would be ok and not a Clevo. With alloy heads they are not that much heavier!! As I have a built Clevo with no home it would make life so much easier, its a 302 block so Im hoping the engineer will allow it.

There is no difference between a 302 and 351 clevo blocks, so unless they measure the stroke they'll never know ;)

Hope to find out this week, i can always build a windsor and sell the clevo if need be. Doesn,t make sense that you can put a big block in a fibreglass hot rod legally but oh no, dont put a 351 in a capri!!!

When I had my capri engineered for engine transplant, the tech department of licencing, guys at the pits and the engineer did not care what the block was just what the capacity was.

wether you do windsor or clevo the monts are the same and as fare as rego check with your road authority not the engneer as thay will not let you rego it engineerd or not if you want picks on how to do the eng monts and gearbox mounts thay are easy to do your self pm me and l can explain how l made my own for a td cortina no welding needed

Default Clevo capri do it

Im just doing a cleveland capri now, no problem with my engineer (NSW), but it will be a 302 on the rego papers, Im converting to a hydraulic clutch, and as said before the WB radiators can fit with pipes changed, They used to do a small tube 5 core that slowed the water flow and worked unreal. good luck

Who is engineering ur capri with a 302??? i was told u cannot engineer capri's or cortina's with 302ci or 351ci anymore.

They allow the Sth African factory 302 Clevo Piranas' to be reg'd here so if you build to same standards it should't be a problem?

I think the 302 & 351ci only applies in NSW but other states its fine

you can go buy the heavyest model in that style, so say if a V6 capri weighs 1150 you go 1.15 x 294 gives you about 338ci

Id like to buy a complete capri or cortina mini tubbed, 6 point cage with or running gear already engineered so no mucking around for me.

if you want to put a 351 in a capri, going by beau351's sums try a mk3 capri which weighs 1230kgs comes out at 361.62 (1.23 x 294 = 361.62)
