Default 3 speed question

Just had had the drive plate replaced in my escort. It was really badly bashed up and it got me thinking, an engine transplant without a gearbox swap puts a lot of stress on that component especially if it's ooolllldd 3 speed auto. Is this why the drive plate got so stuffed up? the engine swap in question is the 1.3 to a 1.6.
