Hello All,
Looking for a good holiday destination, has anyone been to Hamilition Island for a holiday and do you reccomend it? Or are there better islands to stay on in the QLD region Regards Stealth00 |

Have you got a spare house that you can sell to help pay for the holiday. HI is nice enough, but is way over priced.

What are you lookibg for? We have many different islands for different markets.
Hamilton is a mid range priced, "rock in the water". Great Keppel is a cheaper version of same but a bit '80s. Lady Elliot & Heron are actual coral quays and are dive/snorkel oriented. Many of the whitsunday rocks are now "bonk a backpacker" slums which is good if you are single but not so good for the family. Fraser is great if you are a but greeny or 4WDist. Straddy and Mortein are far to close to Brisvegas so are overrun with bogans in shiny trucks with 48 cb ariels and 5 bullbars. Drunk Is is fun but can be a bit expensive, the northern stuff, lizard. bedara et all are beyond silly at $5k/night++ |

If you are looking at going to the Whitsundays I would suggest staying at a reasonable hotel on the mainland in Airlie Beach and taking a few day trips out to the islands, to either the resorts or the otherwise deserted ones for snorkelling etc. Airlie Beach has had a major cosmetic overhaul in the last few years and has a nice resort type feel to it anyway. On the islands everything is overpriced and doing the day trips means you see more islands and only pay to do the things you really want to do because you will have a day at each.
Well, that's just what I have done the last 2 times.

Wife and I went to Brampton Island a year ago and loved it. It is more a couples island and great if you want a nice quiet holiday. No day visitors either!

We did a road trip and yacht harter from Hamilton a couple of years ago.
We chartered a Beneteau Oceanis 363 for 5 nights out of Hamilton island with "The Moorings". we sailed 187 nautical miles over 5 days and saw everything we could. Best holiday ever! boat cost $2750 for 5 nights and we spent another $500 on food and wine. It was me, my partner and two kids. Club crocodile at Long Island is a dirt cheap family holiday. Family groups can stay, eat and play for about $300 per day sometimes less. If you want to pick up a mooring and use the island its only $50 per night. I loved the whole place and would go back, but I now have access to a 50ft boat out of Cairns for next to nix. Day Dream island is a little more romantic, you get a 4 peice band welcome etc.... There are lots of awsome deals out here, search hard and save a buck.

I went a few years ago and stayed at the Reef View hotel. Meals and drinks are very expensive as all the restaurants are owned by the Island, you can eat anywhere and bill it to your room and pay as you leave. I had a ball but i made a mistake by flying with Virgin as they only flew into Proserpine, so i had to spend 1 night at Airley Beach and then transfer by ferry to Hamilton, and the same on return. I thing Virgin fly direct to Hamilton now ??? If i was doing it again i would stay a couple of nights on Hamilton and the rest at Airley Beach, i had a ball the 2 nights i stayed at Airley, there was back packing chicks every where, open air pubs and cheap grog, i ended up hammered !!

I think Virgin do fly direct there now. Hamilton is over priced and after a few days you do run out of things to do. you are better off doing what GCFordChic said you will see more this way and airlie beach is a nice place to stay.

Beautiful place, very relaxing, pretty expensive but thats why we go on holidays, to splurge. If you've got kids i'd recommend going to arlie beach ( I think thats right ) it's straight oppostite on the mainland and is a far bit cheaper and you can take day trips to the islands.

I agree, head to Airlie and base yourself there.
Hamo is well overpriced, but tourists still pay!

HI is nice..
Was there in about 98/99... hotel was nice, trip to whitehaven beach all meals paid for, 5 star hotel etc etc. Trip out on a couple of Syd-Hobart Yachts as well, bit of a tour of the island in some 4/6wd vehicles and all that.. Mind you that was a work gig so no idea how much it all cost, as was all expenses paid for me. Loved the place, would go back again Chris

All the whitsunday Islands are expensive in the way of consumables, thats just how they are, HI is a very nice spot, but you would not want to spend more than a few days there unless all you wanted to do everyday was drink **** by the pool, as its not an island that has an endless list of activites. But I think it is better than the others, but it all depends what you want to do.
Personally I cant stand Airlie Beach, I am there 5 minutes and I am bored, full of backpackers, everyone raves about the lagoon but I dont think you want to know what happens down there at night. |
