Default Capri front

I have a 1970 capri and when i bought it it came with square headlights but i am not sure whether it is sposed to have twin round headlights or not because i was looking an old targa tasmania book the other day and it had a 1970 Capri with twin head lights. i was wondering if any one new if the 1970 came out with twins or single
thanks

I could be wrong and quiet often am, but from my recollection of the 70s Ford Australia only ever sold rectangle eyed Capris. The round ones were either imports or parts imported by hobbiests. I think (as he cowers in the corner ready to be slammed)

Sort of correct. The face lift was sold here as 50 RS3100 cars where brought into the country.

my capri looks like it has a different front on it like it has a longer front and the guards are real ugly compared to some of the ones i see on the street and they have a flat top on the guards but i think its because they have a different colour on them.

ATCC I think. Anyway, its well documented. Australia was the only country outside the UK to get the RS3100. The only Capri I prefer to this is the South African Perana.

Hey JG55ME......Give 54ghia a break. We know his pinto knowledge is a bit lacking, why would his recollection of the RS3100 Capris be any different? :

Just saying 50 isn't a real lot and obviously not a production run. So there must have been an event or sales drive to warrent bringing 50 units in. As I said theye were never the ones that were for sale in bulk at Ford dealers.

Yes, the RS3100 was a homologation special like the 25 Mk 1 RS2000s and the 25 Mk 2 "German" RS2000s. There is a lot of debate over the exact amount that actually made it out to Oz. My uncle who worked for Ford in the "hayday" reckons only 48 made it out, but the RS register disputes this. I also know of a couple of "facelift" cars in Australia. One is a direct import, brought out by a Tasmanian car dealer in 1973 as he couldn't get one from the mainland. The other is a New Zealand car brought over by a Kiwi who lives in Sydney. (NZ got Capris upto the Mk 3, and is a better, not always good, source for facelift parts.)

V4 2000GT, they are getting thin on the ground now.

On the updates, most cars had a larger square headlight than the early cars with the indicator moved into the bumper. The RS3100 and 3000GXL got round headlights.

The yanks got a lot of facelift Capris with twin headlights, as they were built in Germany. The first twin headlight Capris were the RS2600 in 1970. Check out the blue one in this months Classic Ford Magazine. Its the only one registered in the UK and is emaculate. The same guy owe an RS3100 as well!!!

Yep, and the yanks got twin headlight Mk2s as well. Love them RS 2600s.

I am happy with my Early Mk2 Ghia April 74(was an M reg) and my MINT 2.8i (was a W reg).

I just want a 3000 GT XL R to finish the set :-)

Yeah ours is a v4200gt. We have been told that only three were ever imported, is that true?

All of the "federal" USA Capris had the quad headlamps even in 1969 something to do with their headlight laws.

If you look at any US built or delivered car before about the mid 80' be they Volvo's Toyotas or anything none of them had "styled" headlights.

Have a look at a US delivered Rover SD1 or Jag XJS & you will see what I mean.

I am converting my Capri to look like a facelift & the best place to get a bonnet from is the US mainly because I have been quoted $130 to get one from the US but the best I can do from NZ is $300+. I have everything now except the bonnet.

Yes, I have a USA Capri (mercury) brochure and they look goofy with the huge front and rear bumpers. They have a lot of stupid rules which compromise the style of the european cars.
I had a steel facelift bonnet and I stupidly sold it. I've got a f/glass one stashed away at my mates farm cast off the Perana repo that won the London-Sydney Marathon. I think the Peranas never got twin headlights so they couldn't use it. Challenge F/Glass in Melbourne used to have the moulds.
