try and find the casting date on the head, it should be on the front of the head.
If it is an EL Head, the casting date should be 94 if I remember correctly, if you have an AU hybrid, it will have a casting date of 98.

sorry, my mistake...
My ED has a 91 cast head, and I've also got a head off a 97 EL XR6, which has a 95 casting. That means you have a EL engine

good luck trying to find a new cam... Apparently no one is maufacturing billets for the 4.0 the only option is a reground stock cam with lifter shims.

If the part number is 95xxxxxxxx you're reading the wrong number. EL's came with either a 94DA (or 94DT for Tickford heads) which are the standard head, or a 96DA (96DT for Tickford) which are the hybrid head.
My EL (March 98) came with a 96DA head, and I've successfully run a cam from RPD in it (and pumped out 150RWKW). I now have a full XR engine in it with a 94DT head. To read the right number, you'll have to remove the belt cover. The number starting with 95 is the part number of the timing case - no use). PS: I have that RPD cam for sale if anyone is interested - PM me.

are you sure?? I've just gone all over my tickford head, and the only casting on it, apart from the tickford "T" is "95DT" on the front of the head.
There is a "4.0" with a few other numbers stamped into it next to the no1 intake runner port, but that is it... nothing else. EDIT - 95DT...

oh well... who knows what ford does when it comes to dates... my dads landau was built jan 76, but backdated to dec 75 so it didn't have to comply with new ADRs...
I think what we have established, is that ernie21's EL has a EL head, not the hybrid... It is known that the 96 cast heads are the AU ones...

94AB and 94DT heads were on the very first EL's. Left over stocks from the EF range. They were pretty much all used by Dec 96 / Jan 97.
The head was revised and had part numbers of 95AA or 95DT. These were fitted until the change over to the hybrid motor in 02/98. Then the heads became the AU heads and were cast with a 96DA or 96DT part number. |

So does anyone know of a good cam to go in the hybrid motor? Hopefully one that is suited to the auto.

I am only just getting to no falcon engines and just found out I got a hybrid too..... Does this mean finding cams is going to be a pain in the ***? Is jmm the only people who make one?
Does anyone know of any other issues I will need to consider in regards to modifying this engine? Any help you guys can provide would be great. |

The EL's still run an EL computer, so can't run just any AU cam. Many have tried AU cams in hybrid EL's with poor results.
RPD made the cam in my Hybrid EL, it put out 150RWKW (201 ponies) Give Jaysen a line: cams@rpd.com.au

I beleive arm79 tried an AU cam in his, and it worked poorly, sewing black smoke and such. I let him confirm if I remember correctly or not.

well in all seriousness, I've only tried RPD's hybrid cam, heard bad stories about AU cams (no first hand experience). That's my story, if others here say the surecam one works great, then that'd be a good option too.
