My Monday last Week

I got out of bed on Sunday May 28th at approximately 10:00am. I started work that night at 11:00pm. As per usual I got to work half an hour early, unpaid. At 10:45pm I took a call in the watch house. There was an accident on the Western Ringroad Melbourne Bound just prior to the Calder Freeway. I waited impatiently for my offsider to arrive at work. Our only arvo unit was tied up at a domestic.

At 10:55pm we headed out to the accident. Was actually two seperate accidents. The first involved a vehicle that reversed on to the Western Ringroad into the path of a truck. A short time later, after the truck had pulled off the road, an elderly person panicked seeing the scene and braked, causing another car to run up her rear. We arrived shortly after this. Ambos and fire brigade already in attendence. I started walking to first car. Just as I got there I heard an enormous bang. A further accident had occured because someone decided to travel too fast through the scene of an accident, braked hard and the rubber necker behind her, wasn't paying attention, and ran up the rear.

This is when I had to make the decision and close all city bound lanes of the Western Ringroad. I had 6 vehicles smashed up and injured people. Luckily none deceased. The traffic starts to bank up and no doubt people start to complain. I then had to speak to every driver/witness and work out what had happened. Then organise tow trucks, vic roads to clean up road and finally an hour later clear the scene. These three accidents created 3 hours of paperwork for me.

Most of the rest of the night was quiet. Come 6:15 AM a well know offender in our area decided to breach an intervention order. He has huge amounts of assault history including assault police. 6 members attended his address and before long he was fighting, spitting and kicking members before being sprayed with capsicum spray. I had now been up for nearly 20 hours and was being spat at by this male. He was also making threats to kill me and rape my mother in hell. More colourful langauge was used. I arrested this male, interviewed him and then took him to court to be remanded. It was now 10:30am on Monday morning. Still no sleep. It was finally 11:30am when the defendant's solicitor made the decision not to apply for bail. I returned to the station and at approximately 12:45pm got home, to get some sleep.

I had worked three days prior to this on arvo and day shifts. I still had 6 nights to go and three more shifts of day and arvo before I would get a rest.

Just another day in the life of a Vic copper...........

i think you would of come across some of the idiots i know but i never hang around 'em cause i'd probably be locked up as they have lol... do you round up the greensborough/bundoora area?

While some coppers aren't good the majority are more than Wonderful...

I think society has a huge out of proportion "hypocricy" meter...
everone complains about the coppers (myself included), but heres a bloke that by the sounds of it, would be the one answering you calls for help...

I wish the Vic police force had more of this attitude, and less of the other type.
the only thing that I get annoyed about is, even when I am polite to a copper, I always seem to get nothing but Animosity throw my way, I have even said to one guy, i have been polite and answered all your questions honesty and without being a smarta$$, and I don't think I really deserve this Belligerent attitude.

It was without a doubt very dissappointing to me... I did ring up and speak to another copper, who said perhaps "he had a bad day etc etc", I decided to leave it at that. (personally I thought he was mentally unstable)

SO many people just don't know what you guy's have to go through , and many don't appreciate what you do . I'm pleased to see you post what you had to do , maybe it will open a few peoples eyes what a "real cop" has to do........Ok , there are a few "cowboys" out there that give the majority a bad name ...what occupation doesn't .... I don't think there would be many members here that would swap you jobs , maybe if they "rode shotgun" with you one night it may open their eyes , if you've just had to handle a fatality , then you bust someone for speeding etc. of cause you're going to be a bit "up tight" who wouldn't.

Keep up the good work ... EVERYBODY should appreciate Cops , Ambo's & Fireies , for every bad one there's 100's of good ones. :newangel:

Redrum, unfortunately accidents happen like this all the time. People no longer take control (of their vehicles) and just drive. This leads to accidents, multible vehicle accidents, then injury and then worst of all Death.
All this (accidents) could have been avoided if it wasn't for the error made by the first driver!

You work more shifts than any copper I know!

LTDHO, I work 40 hours weeks, 8 hour days, but in Vic Pol, on the 8 hour roster, when we work nightshift, we do 7 nights in a row, finishing on Sunday morning at 7am, starting again Sunday afternoon at 3pm, then doing monday and tuesday before having 6 days off. I did this, but instead of having Saturday prior to nightshift off, I worked Thurs, Fri and Saturday going into nightshift. Not by choice. That is 13 days in a row. I then get whatever days are owed to me off.

Interesting read there Redrum. I imagine it must be a bizarre way to make a living? And frustrating when you see so much of the community's attitude towards police?

haha sounds great i wanted to be a copper but in QLD but now my dream is to be a mech engineer but your story may prove otherwise

And here lies a lot of the problem. When employees in any job are subjected to long days, odd hours and irregular rostering the veil of friendliness and enthusiasm will wear thin. If the police force was more stringent on keeping to rostering, giving their employees time to unwind and have extra curricular activities I am sure policemen and women everywhere would show the general public a little more consideration and courtesy... I have always have had great dealing with the constabulary here, but I am sympathetic to shift workers, and those with unthankful employees. This is not personally directed to you Redrum, but to the grumpy buggers that give you all a bad name.

Most I know do 4 on and 2 off and that's within Vic police too! Mate you're being rolled!

THANKS FOR THE POST REDRUM . most people thjink police are good helpfull guys . just thought you should know that .
i support you guys when you take action . be it political , strike , or union, also i think you should get paid well for what you do. i think it is unfair that you should have to work that long on one shift though . you should have replacements to take over when a shift is over . or at least not have to turn up for work the next shift.
keep up the good work . and know that most of us dont hate police .if you guys werent out there just imagine what a worse place we would be living in. keep safe.

A very good read Redrum. All the better for its stark reality and absence of any overstatement. Lord knows its a big job in these days, especially in a huge metropolis like Melbourne. Melbourne is kinda my second home, family and friends are there, so I visit a lot. Always coming from Adelaide I feel the whole tempo of life is amplified big time over there. I use the Western Ring Road from Ballarat Road to bypass the city on my way through to St Kilda and destinations further down that way. It is a road system not for the faint-hearted. As I approach that turn off at Albion to enter the Ring Road I adopt my Melbourne driver/survivor mode. The level of heavy transports, multi-lanes and brisk pace must be dealt with vigilantly and decisively. I can so easily see how one slight lapse in attention can result in disaster. I can offer nothing but praise for you and your hard-working fratenity for the great job you do in keeping a lid on the big-city problems over there!

They are most likely on the 12 hours roster. I am still on the 8 hours roster. Pro and cons either way.

If people like I can post the odd story, day, whatever I get up to. Today I am supposed to be on holidays but am about to drive to St Kilda Road, to pay a visit to computer crime. Arrested a rock spider a couple of months ago for an indecent assault on a 14 year old boy. I have to go in and see what sort of things they found on his pc.

would be great to hear different stories, there is always such negativity directed towards Police on this forum.. it might help to show things from a different perspective...
