id be getting that body looked at very closely for the potential rust on the underside of the car and where else it may have gotten to after that period of time in such a humid climate., before bidding. super that it still exists a quicksiliver FEV with provenance sunroof and a 4 speed is very desirable. should be very quirky with some of its details, stamping parts etc. hopefully ends up in the right hands so that this sort of detail is documented and retained. 500k is an attention grabbing media thing but should pull good money. id love it

not missing a thing other than some people are real stupid AND others are potentially inflating the price. important car? YES genuine 54H? YES its been touched a fair bit and had a neglected life. in the real world, in a down market my opinion in that condition subject to a GOOD look at the ole girl 150k should pull it up. IF you have the skillset and the parts its a wonderful candidate to put the parts on and retain and document all the quirky xw stuff that should be on the car(ive not been near it) im confused with the incorrect later spotlight brackets of the pics ive seen. IF you dont have the skillset at 350 plus buyers premium you will not have change out of 500k if restoration path is chosen. if you choose to leave it as is and get it running, you wont have change out of 20k. either way its too much now UNLESS a well heeled buyer just wants it irrespective. hard to believe the mileage with dash screws pulled through, 4 different tyres on the option 52s etc, love the car id love it in my cave but VERY hard to believe smart people with money would be wanting to be highest bidder at this point of the process.....

Yes, I had done mental sums and also landed on $500k all up (including buyers' premium) to have it restored. And what then? Restoring it has destroyed the back-story that you just paid a massive premium for. A bit like the chicken coop owners...

I wouldn't pay more than $120k for it in a normal market given its condition.

I only seen it on the News and seen the rego sticker was Purple but could not see the year, and Purple is a 1979 QLD sticker.

Why one would park such a car up in 1979 ?
The motor would be bugged from sitting for 44 years if it was just left with old oil when it stopped, you have to put fresh oil in them and run that through before letting them sitting, close all of the valves and coat the bores as well and the wheels should be off the ground so you can spin the wheels so the diff has gets oil splashed about on the crown wheel etc and gearbox as well has to be turned, as condensation gets on with with rust.

I have seen engines with rust on the crank journals within a year of sitting with old oil contaminated with say 8000km up, such has water and fuel within it.
Not to mention when dropping the sump plug maybe have 12L of water or so come out before the crusty old oil comes out in blobs.

Not to mention rust will be everywhere in the body and that door with rust sitting in the middle of the side like that ! oh boy !

I hate that it does not have the correct GT grill ! that it may of been in a smash ? was the door bogged up ?
And i do not trust that owner, as who just keeps a XY GT like that ?

My understanding is that they were near uninsurable, and every second one was getting stolen back then.
So what do you do? You don't want/need to sell it, can't afford to drive it, but you know it's worth hanging onto.

I think the grill is probably the correct one Mick, it's probably just the absence of the driving lights that makes it look a bit plain. I think the owner told Grays that a taxi backed into the car at some point in the 70's, and hence the repairs to the doors.

hate to say i told you so.......still too much but good luck to all involved assuming its a genuine sale. ill tell you this much for free. if i was rung by the auctioneers of this car at auction end id be retracting my bid based on an apparent lack of honesty in the process
