Default People Stealing Teslas

I’ve just read of two Teslas (Teslæ?) being stolen from the one house in (…wait for it…) Dubbo. And then being used for generally petty crime over the next few hours.

Honestly, I assumed these cars were so modern and “connected” that an owner could not just track them but remotely alter their characteristics. Is this not actually correct?

Did the owner know at the time that they were stolen?

I can track my cars via the Tesla App on my phone and can do minor things via that. I've never looked into disabling them via the App while being driven by someone. Would have to consider safety and legal ramifications of doing this anyway

I'd assume the thieves broke into the home and stole the cards or similar to drive them. This seems to be the trend these days as modern cars are otherwise difficult to steal and drive.
Often people get woken by Police at the door to tell them their car is gone

Any car can be stolen. Tesla has an option to turn on a PIN to drive but like any security system, you have to have it enabled first to be effective.

I'm going to suggest this person didn't have that option enabled.

And whilst you can track the car remotely, you can't do anything else like disabling them. You can speed limit them remotely and cut the acceleration available by using valet mode.

That’s quite interesting, I had assumed a much greater level of remote control was available to whoever the owner had given master access to.

Was thinking, cap the speed to 35km/h, turn the interior lights on permanently, windows down, get it playing only tunes like We Are Family and Car Wash with the sound turned up really loud…

Risky for say domestic abuse situations or similar. Rare event to steal one of them.

You would think they would be caught pretty quickly.....most petty burglars would be dumb enough to charge it using their credit cards

So young'uns can steal Teslas, but not a car with 3 pedals.
Not much chance of me stealing a Tesla, but show me one with 3 pedals.

Bail sureties are usually proportional to risk and financial situation of the defendant. The magistrate probably decided that was a sufficient sum in such a light.

It’s Dubbo. I’m surprised it was stolen and not burnt out for no reason.

Of the three arrested (last apprehension was on 23rd November), one is on bail until 8th January, another may be on bail (I couldn’t find clear information), and the final defendant was bail refused until 8th January.

So you’re more right than not, PJ.
