I can't comprehend how people can charge over a hundred dollars an hour to do the same job a standard mechanic can do with the laptop. Why is it so expensive? and why should I get a dyno tune rather than a normal tune?
can someone convince me to get a dyno tune. Because I think its a waste of money. Somebody help me LOL move if in the wrong section. thanks

These days it's all about technology. Long gone are the days of new points and plugs. Edits and custom tunes is what it's all about.

generic tune is not for everybody, typicly rich to cover all bases.
a dyno custom tune is done to suit your engine irrespective of how it was built or by whom, aswell as being able to get the best out of your engine in real time, covering all bases.

getting a dyno tune allows the tuner to see exactly how your car reacts..
its not just some generic 6 cylinder turbo tune, its actual edits that allow your car to perform at its peak safely.

but what do they actually adjust? its got aftermarket ecu. and its supposively been tuned by some fancy performance shop and it still runs like a bag. I got one of my mates which is a mechanic, he spent two hours under the bonnet and now it runs like a dream.

As for price, you normally pay for two experienced blokes working on a very expensive machine, the price is justified. it does have slightly more power. but when doing diagnostics why is a dyno benificial over just plugging the laptop in? I dont want to sound like a toss im trying to convince my gf to let me spend the money to get it tuned on a dyno when her brother is a mechanic and reckons that its not needed.

Tuning on a dyno allows sensors to be connected to ensure the engine isn't running too lean or rich, not producing too much nitrogens of oxide, carbon emmisions are minimal, performance is as best as can be, hesitations can be sorted, the engine is not leaning out at high RPM and so on. It is worth the money as the bumometer is not an accurate dyno.

Are you asking the difference between tuning on a dyno, compared to in your back yard with moates gear, for example?

If you think your car runs great as it is, you obviously don't need a custom tune buddy.

I wanna get it tuned coz I wanna crank the boost up to get more power but I dont wanna blow it up so Id rather get them to do it..
so its a safety precaution so you dont detonate it from running it too lean or something

The dyno duplicates road conditions while connected to test gear to confirm all is safe tune wise.

How can a good mech tune without load on engine !!
How is he going to road tune at legal speed limits.. How is going to hear detonation etc ?? Actually a combination of road tune [low rpm & speed] and dyno time gives good drivability.. Actually the money is well spent IMO.. The dyno guys I go to charge sfa the next time I go back so it levels out..

For a $500 odd dyno at Hallam, started at 265rwkw ...... changed the exhaust and then back on the dyno with a retune ..... 322rwkw later. Knowing its running spot on and with as mmuch power as possible, I would say thats bang for your bucks! Carbies .... dont you love em!

tuning on the dyno gives real time tuning, letting the techs tune your car through out the rev range while on load. When you plug into the laptop you cant do this cos you cant see what the car is doing during load at different RPM
Dyno tuning is a much more precise type of tuning. Theres no way i'd ever get a generic tune, only would get custom as every car reacts differently and i would want my car tuned to the way it responds.
