Asked this on a PS forum...received no help. maybe there is someone here that might know:
i just upgraded from 7 to CS (8)...looks good and would like to keep using it. Only problem is whenever i try to open my .psd files created in 7, i'm giving the message: "Could not complete your request because the layer is not a valid text layer" Is there anyway to overcome this, as i need to access all of last years work. I only changed to CS as when 7 finished loading the fonts in the startup screen, it would jump back to windows and close PS?? thanks guys |

Sorry I can't help, but i have this same problem (i was u/g from 6 to CS though).
I searched heaps of PS forums a while ago, and the only thing i could find was a suggestion to remove the file association and put it back. As expected it did nothing, but maybe you might have more luck with it? |

I got PS7 to work again by deleting the prefs file. Which also seems to be a common problem.
but surely i can't be doomed to using PS7 forever?! there must be some way of opening the old files. I'll keep searching and let you kow if i find anything. |

ok...what is happening is that their may be a few font changes in CS that is different to photoshop 7 or ealier....eg....bookman old in photoshop 7 might now be bookman it...same font...just different name. Basically photoshop is asking you to update your fonts to match those in the psd file. Open the psd in PS7 and change the font to something that cs8 have and ps7 have....then it should open. Or copy the fonts too the font dir in cs8.
Cheers.

NONE of my files open!! which would mean not one of them uses a font that it shared between both versions what do you mean by copying the fonts to the 'font dir' in CS?? |

Does it ask to substitute the font in the file for something else?
May be quicker to use the substituted font for each file as you need it, then change the font back to it's original..

The fonts used in your applications are generally all in a system folder located @ C:\WINDOWS\Fonts (on a windows machine obviously...what OS r u running?)when placed in this global location, any application can use them. When you load photoshop it looks at those fonts in the windows dir and loads them accordingly...
What you need to do is take a copy of the font file from whatever you have used in the psd files and place it in the font folder on your comp and restart photoshop and it should appear in the fonts list and your file should load. This works on all versions of photoshop from 7 back....but as i do not have a copy of CS, i cannot try it here. As i said before....a new release of photoshop changes some font titles...don't know why....it renames with an extension. Cheers.

i follow what your saying firefox...are you using CS? which version of CS?
for me it would be better to continue using 7...i have used litterally hundreds of fonts, and it wouldn't be productive for me to locate and re-install all the those fonts. however, when i format next, i'll make sure all the fonts go in fresh with CS. I still think the Middle Eastern version has something to do with it, as others haven't had this problem. only those using ME
