I'm looking into saving for some new rims in the not too distant future for the fatt machine and I'm wondering how big i can go.
The rim style im after comes in the following sizes: - 17 x 8 - 17 x 9.5 - 18 x 8 - 18 x 9.5 Is 8 inches the widest for an EF or is it possible to go ultra wide with the 9.5 inches? ...I'd be going the 18's too btw cheers, Matt

9.5 will just fit in the back if it isnt too low and the guards lipped, but they certainly wont at the front :

Legally, you can only go 1" wider than the largest wheel size available from factory for your model car.
The EF didn't get anything bigger than 16 x 6.5 ?? So 7.5" MAX.

As yagz said only 1" wider per side, in accordance with the "maximum track width increase of 2" rule. technically you'd need an engineers report to go wider due to issues with aquaplaning, increased load on the spindle ect...

Yeah the FTR's are 16 x 7 inch.
I tell ya what, all this technical bullshizz these days sucks absolute balls! Bring back the days of old, where you could build your own hotrod in your garage and have a good ol' time. ...if only i was born back then.

Leave it looking stock and spend the money for wheels on a turbo kit? Even a nice small turbo kit would do the trick.

Don't forget, this is an EF, not an EL.

Ok Yagz, you seem to know this stuff, but I've got a question. Track increases will only occur if the extra width is "outwards" from the hub, correct? So in theory, if you were to run a 9" wide rim on the rear of an e-series (if it fitted), but the extra width was towards the centre of the car, not outwards from the hub, would this not be acceptable?
Probably a stupid question, and it's even difficult for me to word into something understandable, sorry.

If you keep the same offset, track wont change.

That's right Jared, if the track stays the same, the load on the hubs are the same.
The legalities on tyre width has nothing to do with the law on vehicle tracks. Just to clarify, it's a national law that states a vehicles track can be widened by 25mm from standard, going from the centre of each tyre where it contacts the ground. The tyre width law is a state by state thing, AFAIK, most states say either 1" or 2" wider than the max rim size on the placard. SA for instance doesn't actually list any laws for maximum wheel/tyre width, as long as the track, clearance and wheel protrusion is legal, then TransportSA are happy.

ah there's a thread on this wheel issue every day. Yes the rule is 25mm, but when you convert that to inches, an inch is 25.4mm, so technically, you can't increase the size at all.

I'm happy with my current GO, would rather put my moolah towards the SHOW.
I'm not interested in turboing my ef (shock horror) My power car is coming later in life when i can afford to run it. (IT being : a supercharged 351 block)

I say stuff it and go for the 18x8" on the front, and the 18x9.5 on the back, make your car live up to its no plate ;)
Hang on to the FTR's if you do ever get a defect for them being too wide :P
