Default rekon dev5 or manual + dev3hl?

just toying with the idea of getting some engine packages from jmm

if you guys were spending the cash would you opt for:

dev5 kit

or

dev3-hl
with a 5speed conversion?

i duno which way to go... probably leaning towards the 5speed option..

thanks

yes the 5 speed version would be way better IMO.

Just depends, do you want to change gears or not?

In a few months, once ive saved enough, thats exactly what my car will be running!

neither... maybe get the manual conversion done their with manual conversion parts you've sourced yourself (cheaper)... then i would get a wade cam.. or if you really want jim mock cams.. buy it mail order and install yourself or get it done somewhere else.. you'll save alot of money this way. and exhaust i would just get pacemaker comps with a redback mandrel bent exhaust.

Of those two options I would got the dev3 + 5 speed, but it really depends on what you want to drive (do you like manuals?).

I agree with everything neb said

well if you do go through jim mock i'm sure they'll do a good job and you will get what you want and be happy with it... but you'll be paying top dollar for it when theres cheaper options around.

yes but are those cheaper options going to work in the end? I have no "gaurantee" when I try to do stuff myself. Can I fit extractors? - NO, can I fit a cam? - NO. Will these mods give me the same output as a dev3hl? - NO IDEA!

If someone wants to do it for me (beer is good to) then I would risk going the wade/pacy combo, but untill then ill save for the JMM kit.

The cam is a 30 minute job without letting the engine cool down beforehand. Exctractors would need to be welded so cant be done at home.

As a dev3hl auto owner get the dev5 and manual conversion.

dev5 and auto would probably disappoint.

Manual dev3hl will do around 14.9 for the quarter auto 15.6 maybe 15.4 with a 3.45 diff if I am lucky.

well i've changed a cam its not hard... but i wouldn't have a clue on how to dial it in or anything.. i got someone else to put mine in originally.

polyal i guess it just comes to personal preference.. its easy just to save up money and buy a kit installed if thats what you want. or you could also do some research and try some other things, theres alot of other options out there. i think its also more satisfying putting together your own mix of things instead of just buying a package.

yeah
well dev5 and 5speed convertion is out of it simply coz of money

so i am liking this dev3hl and 5speed conversion option. that is with using a set of headers and rest of the exhaust from my aunty. should save a bit of cash.

And thats fair enough, how much money would you be saving if I wanted to get 130-140 rwkws (dev3hl). I know I started another thread on this but hey..

If someone can say, get XX and XX and should get atleast 130rwkws then I would do it. I guess I could order a cam, extractors and pay someone else to put it in. $2700 for a dev3hl is pretty pricey. What would the price of wade/pacey come to without labour?

i think a wade 1004 112 cam, with pacemaker comp extractors and 2.5inch exhaust should get you to around 130rwkw.. i'm guessing around $1500 max if you paid someone to install it.

getting back on topic boz with the jim mock kits... i would go the dev3hl kit with manual rather then just a dev5 with an auto. definately get the manual conversion done! make it much more enjoyable to drive!

Go for the 5spd + DEV3HL.

Don't listen to the so called 'cheaper' methods too much, as unless you're handy with spanners and can fit it all yourself, it will not be cheaper.
Results may also be unpredictable.

JMM have put some nice packages together work very well together, that takes time, effort and experience.

You guys always make it sound so cheap.
You forgot the vernier gear, valve springs, pod filter, snorkle, spark plugs, leads, and dyno tune.
(All come with the DEV kit).

Once it's all added up, and done properly by a comptetant mechanic who actually knows how to clock up a cam (many don't), you won't be saving much, if anything.

Compare apples with apples guys.

Rick.

Cam $120
Extractors $420 fitted
Exhaust $300-400
Vernier gear $100
Valve springs - not needed with 1004
Pod - say $100
Snorkel - $40

I had my cam dialed in and run on the dyno for $120. Not hard to do though...

I make it under 1500

Go which way you think is best for you. Some people such as myself enjoy doing the work (save money + learn). Others would prefer just to avoid any problems and get somebody else to do it. Make up your own mind.

what stockstandard said you can do it cheaper on your own and get good results instead of just a kit. for those that don't have much knowledge maybe just buying a dev kit is the way to go.

vernier gear is used to dial a cam in to the right specs (get it into the correct position). it replaces the stock cam gear.

Vernier gears are typically $180, though have been on special for $120.
If valve springs are not needed, then it won't make as much power as a DEV3HL, it should probably be compared with a DEV3 @ $2450, fitted.
You forgot spark plugs which are minimum of $20, though can be as much as $40.
You also forgot leads, which can be as little as $50, or as much as $150.

Everything is hard to do if you don't know how, sure for you and I it's a piece of cake, but that's not the point, he doesn't want to or know how to do it himself.

I don't know where you had your cam installed and clocked up for $120, though I suspect the majority of mechanics will charge more like $250.
Quote:

And I make it well over, plus the time and frustration someone who isn't handy with the spanners will have trying to piece it all together.

Rick.

yeah, pic of a vernier gear here: http://titan.homelinux.com/gallery/E...build/IMG_1615.

the cam is attached to the center, the timing chain on the outside. you can change the angle at which the cam sits to better tune the car. Not always needed but good to have. Mine is a bit of a waste because both cams I have had made best power when the cam was in the stock position.

yeah sounds good, hey sox is your BA going to cop the same treatment as the XG?

Dont get me wrong, I would love to do everything myself, but I dont have the facilities (renting, not really meant to do anything mechanical, although I did do my radiator..lol) and I dont have very good tools atm (thats being worked on).

Pretty much, I'll fit the JMM headers and exhaust (DEV3), then probably get a flash tuner.
I had it dynoed today at 137rwkw, standard.

sox i think he means with extractors

also you don't need new spark plugs and leads unless the ones you already have are stuffed. so its a bit of a waste unless you need them. i know they are 'performance' ones but i doubt it makes much difference.
