If its just a diff centre, then it should be a perfect fit. Just bear in mind the possibility of different ratios...

i did consider that, i was also wondering about the speedo censor, it wouldnt be as simple as swaping the censor would it? the censor would apply to the gear box aswell?

The speedo sensor is located in the transmission, so if the ratios are identical then you could use the same one. if not, then use the one out of the cars ratio diff your putting in.
To the best of my knowledge, Ford didnt change spline spec for any model AU. |

Sorry, i know where the speedo censor is located, what i was wondering...... is it just the diff ratio the censor works off? or will the gears running the censor be different in an auto box to a maual?

The sensor works off the transmission alone, if you change the diff ratio, then it wont pick up the change. Unless you have a sensor to suit the new ratio.
I dont know where exactly the sensor is im sorry. Hopefully someone will post here with more info. |

hey Tim...
Great forum to read, just bought myself a 2002 AU ute that drives awesome but diff is having a party back there...lol Have found a 2nd hand low k's sedan diff and speed sensor to swap over. Glad you did it first... How have you found the sedan ratio in the ute?? Isnt it something like 3.15 instead of 3.45? Thx again bud... Stu (Perth) |

I'll just clear up the confusion here becuase the terminology being thrown around is obviously being used for different things.
A diff centre refers to the spider gears (and clutch packs in an LSD) and their housing that bolts to the ring gear. It may also refer to a spool, minispool or torsen mechanism. Diff gears means the ring an pinion, less the centre described above. Changing the centre doesn't change the ratio but may change the axle requirement if the splines are different. (Not on the AU) Changing the diff gears may change the ratio and the speedo sender would then require changing as a result. |

I hear ya MadMelon...
You are right with the terminology... The question i had re the ratios is based on an assumption that Tim and just swapped the diff head over as a whole unit, not just swapped the centre over. I will be popping the diff head out of the housing... popping in the sedan unit which i understand to have a higher gearing and changing speed sensor to suit. With an obvious huge clean out and wash down of the axles to remove any lurking nasties. Stu |
