NEW 4×4 SALES UP IN JUNE AS COVID RESTRICTIONS EASE

New 4×4 sales up in June 2020 compared to the previous two months… but still down on the previous year.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has revealed a total of 110,234 new vehicles were sold in June 2020, which is up significantly from the 59,894 sold in May 2020… but down by 6.4 per cent compared with June 2019. Nevertheless, it’s the strongest result since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis.

FCAI chief executive, Tony Weber, attributed the slight recovery to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the extension of the Federal Government’s instant asset write-off scheme, and brand and dealer pro-activity.

“Some states have seen the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, and this has increased floor traffic through dealerships,” Mr Weber said.

“In addition, June is traditionally a very strong month for new vehicle sales. The End of Financial Year campaigns are well known, so it’s an excellent time for businesses and consumers to replace their vehicles.

Volkswagen sold 1229 Amarok 4x4s in June 2020.

“In June 2020, this has been reflected in strong results for business purchases, which have increased by 6.3 per cent on June 2019.

“The extension of the Government’s instant asset write-off scheme has also been a positive influence. This program allows businesses to bring forward tax deductions for eligible expenditure.

“Finally, we have seen a strong surge in marketing activity from both brands and dealerships, who are offering an array of attractive retail packages in a bid to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Mr Weber said.

4×4 sales

Four of the five top selling vehicles in June were 4×4 vehicles, according to the FCAI, reflecting the unique nature of the Australian market. Those vehicles were the Ford Ranger (5092 sales), Toyota HiLux (4811), Toyota Prado (2374), Mitsubishi Triton (2292) and Toyota LandCruiser 200 (1521).

There were also a few 4×4 vehicles that have actually showed improved sales year-on-year, with the RAM 1500 Express up a staggering 126.1 per cent for the first six months of 2020 compared to 2019, the RAM 1500 Laramie up 33.8 per cent, the LDV T60 up by 14.3 per cent, the Great Wall Steed up by 6.5 per cent and the Ford Everest up 5.1 per cent. Everything else was down on 2019.

A mixed result

Despite the positive upwards trend, the FCAI points out that June represents the 27th consecutive month of decreasing sales for the automotive industry in Australia, which it attributes to a number of environmental, political, financial and health issues within the Australian market.

Mr Weber added that associated Government initiatives had likely supported the slight recovery.

“Stimulus packages from the Federal Government, such as Job Keeper and Job Seeker, have helped to restore some consumer confidence and supported the small bounce back during June.

“However, there’s no doubt that the new vehicle industry in Australia is still under high pressure. We’re not out of the woods yet,” Mr Weber said.

New-car sales in June bounced back better than expected after a tough April and May, now the industry is bracing for a stock shortage in the coming months.

Australians treated themselves to more than 110,000 new cars in June 2020 – the strongest monthly result since June last year and better than was widely anticipated – as most of the nation gradually emerged from COVID-19 lockdowns.

The recovery was also driven by tradies and small businesses buoyed by the Federal Government’s $150,000 instant asset tax write-off, which saw all three German luxury brands – Audi, BMW and Mercedes – post massive sales growth, and many mainstream dealers sell out of utes and vans even though the scheme was extended to the end of the year at the beginning of the month.

Australia's top-selling vehicle, the Toyota HiLux ute, posted an all-time monthly sales record – with 6537 deliveries its best result since June 2018, while the Ford Ranger was the nation's top-selling four-wheel-drive.

Recreational vehicles and heavy duty four-wheel-drives also sold well as Australians plan to holiday at home in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, with sales gains for the Toyota Prado, Toyota LandCruiser and Nissan Patrol.

Contrary to earlier predictions between 85,000 and 95,000 vehicles would be delivered last month, official figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries showed a total of 110,234 were reported as sold in June 2020, a decline of only 6.4 per cent compared to the same month last year – and a stark contrast to the 35.3 per cent and 48.5 per cent declines in May and April respectively.

Sales of utes and vans surged by 8.6 per cent, and SUVs also outpaced the market (down by only 2.9 per cent versus the overall market decline of 6.4 per cent), however passenger cars got stuck in reverse (down 26.1 per cent), reflecting changing buyer preferences.


The new-car sales result for the first half of 2020 – 442,415 vehicles reported as sold – was down 20.2 per cent compared to the same period last year, following record declines in the grip of the crisis in April and May.

The latest figures show signs of recovery; the weakest June tally in nine years follows a 23-year low in May and the lowest April result in at least 30 years.

June 2020 was the second month in a row of month-to-month growth.

The surge was so unexpected the car industry is now bracing for a slowdown in the coming months as many dealers have run out of key models – in particular utes and vans – which historically post their best sales in the lead up to the end of the financial year, 30 June.


Factory shutdowns during the coronavirus crisis temporarily cut off supply of new models, and stronger than expected demand depleted many showrooms of remaining stock.

In a media statement the chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Tony Weber, said showroom traffic increased as COVID-19 restrictions eased.

“Stimulus packages from the Federal Government, such as Job Keeper and Job Seeker, have helped to restore some consumer confidence and supported the small bounce back during June,” said Mr Weber. “However, there’s no doubt that the new vehicle industry in Australia is still under high pressure.We’re not out of the woods yet.”

Australian Automotive Dealer Association CEO James Voortman said new-car sales are “still a long way from a full recovery across most sectors of the market” and it is “too soon to declare the industry downturn as over”.

Industry insiders believe factory shutdowns in the past few months will lead to a sales slowdown in July and August due to a lack of stock.


Toyota, the market leader for the past 17 years in a row, accounted for one in five of all new vehicles reported as sold, as its market share slipped from 26.5 per cent in April, and 24.2 per cent in May, to 20.7 per cent in June.

Toyota finished comfortably ahead of Mazda and Hyundai. In another upset, Volkswagen ranked sixth outright in June for the second month in a row.


The Toyota HiLux ute remains Australia’s top-selling vehicle with a comfortable margin ahead of the Ford Ranger – when both the 4x2 and 4x4 segments are combined, as is industry practice.

Sales to private buyers fell by 7.9 per cent compared to the same month last year, while sales to business fleets increased by 6.3 per cent, and government deliveries dropped by 16.3 per cent.


Impact of $150,000 instant asset tax write-off scheme

In the first week of June 2020, the Federal Government extended the $150,000 instant asset write-off to the end of the year, in another attempt to jump-start the economy.

It means tradies and business buyers can claim the expense and receive the full deduction this financial year rather than spreading it over several years.

However, there is widespread confusion about how it applies to cars. In most cases, the instant asset write-off applies to motor vehicles valued up to $57,581.


The $150,000 limit applies to work vehicles that can carry more than one tonne or nine occupants or more.

It means some of the more expensive utes – such as US pick-ups – may not qualify for the $150,000 instant asset write-off because, despite their size, they are not rated to carry one tonne.

It means a portion of the business expense (up to $57,581) can be claimed in one lump sum this financial year, but the balance beyond that would need to be claimed in subsequent financial years.

The car industry, car dealers, and CarAdvice advise buyers to get their own independent tax advice to see how the $150,000 instant asset tax write-off might apply to their individual circumstances.

I can't help thinking that Ford is throwing away easy sales with an entry petrol pickup.

Couldn't agree more with you on this point. Its obvious Ford just don't give a toss about that market, which is a shame.. I guess whilst people are buying its top spec models hand over fist it wont change its mind either...

You cannot get anything at the moment as far as Wildtrak, FX4, SR5 etc. Everyone bought with the instant tax write off.

Plus, the 4x2 petrol Hilux workmate has the choice of manual & auto, probably mostly manual sales in these workmates, but the auto adds a few more sales and option for the buyers in this segment

Yes, they started back in early June on a mission to get as much stock as possible to Australia.
July is usually a lot lower sales every year after EOFY so this one may be exceptionally so due to
tax incentives. Will be interesting to see how sales trend for the rest of the year.

They may be made in Thailand but Ranger and Everest were designed here mate,
and that's why so many buy them instead of letting Toyota dominate everything.

I don't know what the answer is with cars and SUVs but importing from Europe isn't working
with their expensive labour banged on top of the freight. Unless we can get something from
India or another Asian RHD plant were pretty much goosed. The only other choice is China
but they are not a RHD manufacturer.

I wouldn't pop the champagne saying that the COVID slowdown has stopped. A lot of those sales were instant writeoffs that people would have committed to before the govt extending it till year end.

Lets see what July/August look likes and worse still, if Job Keeper ends in September and we haven't bounced back enough looks like.

Normally some pull forward of sales with EOFY, probably doubly so this year with the tax write offs,
so the absolute best we can hope for with business purpose vehicle purchases is a return to some
kind of " normal" sales levels. It's actually good to see people out shopping and spending their money,
generating activity is exactly what the economy needs to build confidence.

Lack of product in the next few months will be the killer.. just tried buying tyres for the ute recently was a challenge when dealers were telling me out of stock with no eta... im sure this will be mirrorded in new car sales too in the following months
