I've recently got a hole in my resinator so I've decided to take the opportunity to get a catback exhaust. I've been to every exhaust shop in my town and have the following options:
$266 2.5 Redback (fella said its not straight through, but like it? not sure what he meant as i asked a few times and he said the same thing) $280 2.5 Redback straight through $245 2.5 lukey straight through $285 2.5 Mercury straight through $250 2.5 Mercury tri flow. All prices include installation as well. Which one from above would give me the best note? I'm looking for something nice and throaty. I did a search but couldn't find anything on mercury exhausts. How are these considered compared to Redback? Right now i'm leaning towards the Straight through Redback. Any help would be appreciated. Adrian. |

Do you have a 4.0 or a 5.0?
I have a redback straight through on my 5.0, it is throaty, but not very loud and doesn't drone when cruising... IMO it is ok, but could be a lot better... but for the price you pay for it, its pretty good.

With regard to the redback..
There are 2 systems available for our model cars.. 1 Has a main resonator and then a second smaller one after the diff Other just has the main resonator with a straight through rear section.. I have the 2nd and i love it.. Wit my auto it was nice but with the manual it is a touch on the loud side.. Cheers, Nik

Wow, it must of taken quite a while to upload all of your pics of your car then!
I've read a bit about hot dogs and so fourth. Is a hotdog just another name for a resinator? Cheers, Adrian. EDIT: also, does that mean there wouldn't be a muffler? |

LOL.. yer did take a while..
Nah from my under standing a resonator has a series of folds/bends of the pipe inside the casing which is wat helps muffle the sound.. a hotdog is a straight through muffler.. See my ASCII art to demonstrate.. Resonator: .....========== .....|>>>>>>>>>|>> .....|^<<<<<<<<| >>|>>>>>>>>^| .....========== Hotdog: ......._________ ....../_________\ >>|>>>>>>>>|>>> .....\__________/ LOL.. Got to love ASCII art.. Hope that helps.. Cheers, Nik

Ah ok. I see. Good ol' ASCII ;)
With the system you've got, does it not have a rear muffler? Is this correct (so i dont look like a fool when I go back to the exhaust shop). Catalytic converter ------pipe------resonator-------straight through piping to the end. Or is there a muffler in there somewhere? Sorry for all the dumb questions :P Appreciate your help! |

I have a cat back 2.5" redback single muffler no resonator system on my car, it goes like this: Headers, Cat, Muffler, str8 thru. this is one of the ones that u mentioned. the other has a resonator after the muffler right near the tip.
I like the sound mine makes, loud and deep, yet not so loud im a cop magnet. but when i get propper extractors, ill prob get a resonator installed as well, cuz i rekon it would get too loud for me |

In my last EL I had the 1 with just the single muffler and that was pretty loud, but again didn't really drone.

Would getting the exhaust with the single resonator then straight through be under the legal db limit?

Ah ok. thanks for that.
Anybody got any more opinions? Also, anybody ever heard a Mercury exhaust? Half of the exhaust shops around here only sold these, and haven't been able to find too much about them. I'm hoping to get it done tomorrow or Monday. Thanks! |

i think u'll find redback is a well proven and trusted exhaust by most of the e-series people.. I have never heard of "mercury" exhausts which makes me question how good they are....
Cheers, Nik

You can't go wrong; it's cheap(er) and Lukey/Walker is a reputable company.

Well, reading through every exhaust thread i could find on aff, it seemed that people thought the redback systems sounded better than the lukey. So, i booked my car in for tomorrow morning to get a 2.5" redback, 1 muffler with no resonator. Cant wait!

Well, i got my exhaust done this morning. Redback 2.5" catback with 1 muffler straight through. I would of hoped for it to be louder as you can barely hear it from inside the car. It was much much louder with a hole in my cat. Will it get louder, the more i drive it?

It will get a bit better once the system beds in and carbons up. But even then they still aren't that loud.

redback exhausts are great. i have a single 2 1/2 with 2 mufflers. mine still gets pretty loud when i get up it.
below is a link to a couple of videos. the one at idle is with my old exhaust. 2 1/2", press bent to diff, and 1 muffler. it was extremely loud. the other 2 are at the drags, with my current exhaust http://video.google.com.au/videosearch?q=41tre

Anybody got any ideas how i can make my current setup louder? The muffler is in the middle btw. I notice on my invoice, it says they put a turbo muffler in. Is this better than a "straight through" muffler? Or is a turbo muffler the standard muffler? |

which exhaust did you get again... was it a redback?
i may be wrong, but i thought lukey had the turbo type muffler. its probably not a bad thing having it a little on the quiet side. you dont want to be attacting too much attention. have you got extractors? that will make it louder.
