Default Ford v8 in a stag

Does anyone know how much is involved in dropping a old windsor into a truimph stag ? I may have access to a firesale one coming up and the old leyland v8s a bit of a boat anchor.
Saw one on ebay in Vic. fitted with a windsor but not much detail on specs. Thought it might be worth consideration just that little bit different and I love the look of the car.

Sounds like a great Idea!
If it had a alloy leyland v8 its worth doing that up though, they are a great engine with work done...
Windor weighs lots more.
The original stag v8 would be iron though.
If it was me, Id go a leyland 4.4.

Even the all alloy Rover 3.5 V8 would be a great engine for a Stag.

I seem to recall it was formed from an adaptation of two small four cylinder blocks 1.5 s I think with v little power so any sig bigger engine would need massive upgrade incl diff drive shaft half shafts springs/dampers much bigger radiator without even considering space. Massive project lot of planning to make it reliable. It wasn't reliable when new.

The original stag motor uses two ohc heads from the Triumph Dolomite Sprint 4 cyl with of course it's own block , the most common replacement was the Rover 3.5 as mentioned above , very light weight motor and as its been done before probably the best replacement for the original motor. Any later 3.9 Disco or 4.6 Rangie motor will suit with out the EFI as a carb set up may fit under the bonnet better , the EFI was taller I think .

Thanks for that LG very informative. My original thinking was a ford motor would be a more reliable proposition and after the initial setup costs be cheaper and easier to repair. However as others have mentioned and I hadn't thought of is the weight issues ( not to mention overall size ) puts a different light on things.
From recent experience as a weekender car I would want a manual . as good as the zf I had was , for that weekend fang a v8 deserves a manual . So a little bit more research is required .

I had a Stag about 35 years ago (I can't believe it really was that long ago) and while the little original 3l was going it was a great combination with the manual overdrive.
Unfortunately the crank broke, pistons had holes in them... and I gave it away as I couldn't afford to fix it at the time. My intention was to put the 3.5l Rover motor in it.
I still think I'd opt for an all alloy lightweight V8 over anything else.

My father is getting rid of his land rover.
A family friend was going to buy it so dad lent him it to take for a weekend and make sure it was good for what he wanted, long story short it ended up absolutely worthless cause the **** ran it dry and so the bottom end has let go. Our mechanic said its $1000 bucks to fix and luckily the rest of the engine is good.
If you're after a motor, and handy yourself it can be fixed by anyone who knows what they're doing.
I don't know where you are, we're about half hour from Sydney.
It's got the 4.0litre engine.
Only thing is that it's the whole car for sale, so if some one picked it up for 500 then took what they wanted and rang a scrap yard they can recoup some cash.

Its my tr7 with a 3.9 V8. Just got it going, and its quite nuts! :-D! Only running it in here at the Geelong Speed Trials.

Rover v8s with all the good bits are a good thing! Mines happy to rev to 6500+!!

Well if its a ford v8 it needs to be a small desk Windsor. So 302/347/363 depending on your budget. Not a 351w let alone a Clevo or modular motor. Hell, they take up more space than big block. But a 400+ hp Windsor with a big cam and a manual trans would be fantastic fun.

That said he rover v8 always sound good too.

I was going to take the engine off my dad's hands but I have nothing for it, my ba is getting supercharged, so once that's complete the funds for a v8 project aren't really there. Let me know if interested, my dad got too disheartened with this set back and our mechanic has just turned single trader so can't commit the time or workshop space, so my old man just wants it gone.

is the p76 bellhousing pattern the same as rover 3.5? just wondering as i have an adapter bell housing floating around in the shed(somewhere) for 3.5 rover v8 to toyota w58 gear box.

One of the Stag V8's had what enthusiasts call "a bicycle chain" as a timing chain, for good reason.

I've seen a few with little 253 V8's in them (I know, it's physically the same size as the 308, but the capacity was probably to keep within rego requirements for capacity larger than original stuff.

I don't see why a smaller Windsor would present problems...probably 289 would be the biggest you could reasonably go without worrying the rego guys too much, but rest assured dropping a different V8 in them is a very common engine swap, and well worth doing, as the engine was the weak link in what was otherwise a sweet chassis and an awesome looking car. And with the size and weight of the car, you don't need a massive engine to give amazing performance.

It's an area where there is a huge database of knowledge out there, both in Australia and overseas.

Just do it!!!!

Why stuff around with new engine mounts, g/box adapters, drive shafts, wiring, Engineers reports etc when you can just throw an alloy P76 engine in it.
Doesn't make sense to create so much work for so little result if it is going to be a daily driver.

You'd still need to do that if you dropped in a Rover / P 76 V8 as the Stag V8 was basically 2 1500 cc Toledo blocks grafted together to make a 3 litre V8 .

It's simply way too heavy and will destroy the handling . The Rover V8 being all alloy is actually marginally lighter than the 3 litre Triumph unit .

After the having a Xr8 I can appreciate the wieght issue , while never an issue in 99% of conditions it certainly wasn't a able to keep up with much in the twisties (reminded me of the SLR5000) . Outright power isn't a issue , more interested in torque lower in the rev range and the sound of course . Cousins got a '72 rangie and while it cuoldn't pull the top off a pudding it sure does sound nice .
As i mentioned it would be a weekender and a lot of research has to be done .

The Rover V8 is probably the BEST production pushrod V8 engine ever built after the 392 and 426 chrysler hemis . Certainly specific output in relation to it's capacity . I remember well Alan Grice saying when they took the Commodore over to Europe how he could not believe how the Rovers just blew past the Commodore effortlessly . I think the reason for the lack of performance in a Range Rover is purely a power to weight issue . You can also take the Rover / P 76 out to 4.9 litre safely .

iirc the lightest rover 3.5 fitted to the early sd1 rover was about 160 kg`s.
