Default Broken Timing Chain

Hey guys,

Drove my car to Melbourne airport on Tuesday, flew too Sydney in the morning and then back in the afternoon. Went to start the car… car started… Plunkett hears bad noise… Car dies… Plunkett cries. I had to get the car towed from the Airport to Knoxfield (Melbourne South Eastern suburb) 61km! Thank Christ my friend has RACV total care and didn’t work to fare away.

I’m not looking forward to tomorrow, when I need to take the rocker cover off and find out what the damage is.

This is the second time this has happened, the first was just after the engine was built and every thing was still under warranty, but I am well and truly out of that period now.

Talking to some people, apparently the distributors are poo in the early E Series and a faulty distributor is the cause. If any one else has any ideas about what else the cause is, I would be more then happy to hear them.

Cheers

not the dizzy, nothing wrong with an e-series dizzy, the TFI can die when it gets old, but it then cranks but wont start.

more detail on the noise please.

Noise was like a slow loose grinding of gears or something. It probably lasted less then 3 seconds and it wasn’t overly loud. I know that’s not much of a help but I don’t know how better to describe it.

Thanks guys

Dan,
I think my car sensed I was almost going to be able to drag it, so it crapped out just to cause me pain.

The valves and pistons can collide if the timing chain ****s up so everything gets demolished.

With non interference valves and pistons they wouldnt hit and it would be good.

Do you have pics of when it happened to your motor john? Post them up to make plunkett feel better!! :P

That seriously made my eyes water, so much broken metal. Thanks for suggesting that Dan, that’s exactly what I wanted to see... ****!

EFFALCON, what caused the demise of your timing chain?

Never found out what failed on my car.
timing chain was in 1 peice, tensioner was working, never got a final answer.
just replaced the timing gear and head and off i went again :P

the inside of the timing case was all worn and ground down so maybe one of the guides was stuffed and the chain was rubbing. when it let go it broke the timing case too.
