A good news story in the auto world. "Australians planning to holiday at home are helping drive a sales surge of the Nissan Patrol four-wheel-drive – even as the overall car market posted two of its worst months in 30 years due to the coronavirus crisis. Nissan Australia has reportedly put in an urgent call for more Patrols out of the factory to keep up with local demand." "While the Nissan Patrol sells at about one-fifth the rate of the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series – approximately 1000 versus 5000 year-to-date – demand is strengthening even though it is a petrol-only proposition. The Nissan Patrol petrol V8, which starts from $76,990 plus on-road costs, costs about $15,000 to $20,000 less than the equivalent Toyota LandCruiser diesel V8, and has recently had a bold facelift. Despite repeated calls for a diesel option, Nissan says the Patrol will remain a petrol-powered V8 because the cost to develop a diesel for our market is prohibitively expensive. Fuel economy tests show there is little difference between the petrol Nissan Patrol and diesel Toyota LandCruiser on the open road, although the Patrol is much thirstier in the city and suburbs." Big car - tick Massive petrol V8 which will be simple to maintain - tick Increasing sales despite recession/corona/etc - tick Looks like it's got the same happy formula as the RAM in today's market.

Without this thread turning into a petrol vs diesel debate, you do have to wonder how much better the V8 petrol Patrol will be over the V8 diesel of the LC?
No DPF and cheaper servicing is a huge plus, as well as it being cheaper to purchase from the beginning.

All well and good with petrol around a $1 a litre, but it won't be there forever. Then watch the sales drop right off.

$20k buys alot of fuel.
You could do 150k+ kms in the Patrol and still be infront.

It’s one thing to say the patrol gets 20l/100kms around town. But under the same conditions, what’s does the diesel LC get? I’ve heard over all economy, they are both pretty on par or the patrol not much worse. $20k buys a lot of petrol...

My friend has a 2004 Armada with the same 5.6 engine (a little less power back then), it sounds like an absolute beast! Supposedly it’s a stock exhaust, but it must have a very worn out muffler, it’s kinda loud.

I’ve read owner reviews and journalist reviews of both towing caravans. Patrol only a bit worse than the land cruiser. Hardly enough to justify the price difference to go the diesel.

Seems insane the Cruiser diesel would tow at 20L/100km (anyone got the review link?)
My old HJ60 would go 9.5 to 10.5 highway, no more than 13.5 towing 16ft pop top. What's going on with its gearing? It should be 30 to 40% more efficient than same size petrol.

And another: https://www.carsales.com.au/editoria...-review-112390 There’s a YouTube video somewhere of a drag race between the patrol and land cruiser. Difference was the patrol was towing a caravan, the land cruiser on its own. The patrol won I’m pretty sure.

Wow that Landcruiser V8 is a s$$t box. $20000 dearer. Slower, uses more fuel. And because it’s a diesel it’s more expensive per litre to purchase.
No wonder Toyota is dumping it next year. |

My gripe with these is our market didn't get the updated interior with the facelift for some reason, they are very dated inside, no android auto or carplay either.

I like the 200 Series Cruiser, but from what I've read the Patrol is better in pretty much every way.
I'd buy the Patrol and throw the $20k I saved into fuel costs. Like other have said I've heard during towing the Patrol isn't much worse than the cruiser. |
