I have Tickford front brakes on my AU Series 2 XR8 ute and they are rattling quite bad. Left one cluncks (same sound as the rattle) when I put my foot on the brakes. All of the rattles go away if I ride the brakes so I know its these calipers.
How can I fix it? |

Did you use new calliper bolts and if not did you at least use threadlock/loctite on them?
Coz the same happened with my BF XR and it was due to a caliper bolt becoming undone!!! |

I have those installed. I'm thinking they're worn out.
Bionic, I know the noise you're talking about and I've had it in another falcon with stock brakes but its slightly different. Bolts are all tight though! |

I tried to get that kit here in Australia, but they were no longer available. I also was chasing a rattle in the front that would go away under braking (AU2 with tickford premium calipers).
I ended up replacing ball joints, sway bar d bushes, control arm bushes, and fitted that brake kit. That killed the rattle in the front end completely in my case. It wasn't one component that was causing it, was a combination of a few things. I ended up tracking it all down after putting it on a hoist and a mate went over the front end. The local suspension (nation wide name) shop and the local mechanic both tried to find where the rattles were coming from without success, and suggested I just put up with it.

I've got new bushes and ball joints there, ready for me to pull the arms out and have them pressed. I'll buy that US caliper hardware kit too. I may as well do it properly now I can get the parts.

I had a similar noise on my TS50.
Thought it was the new pads fitted to brakes. Ended up being big bushes under radiator had shagged out causing knock/rattle when braking. Sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck with it. Steve

i had the same problem when I replaced the brakes on my S3 Tickford Brakes. The clunking on my came from when the car was in reverse and i applied the brakes. I had my wife reverse the car while I had a look at what was happening. When the brakes were applied, the pads would grip and the caliper would move then bounce back into position.
Have a look at the thread I posted back in 2005. http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=16031 It may explain the issues your having. The issue was the missing rubber inserts. Anyway, read this thread for some detail.

New pins and anti-rattle clips and it is still doing it. The pin has some movement in it, more on the left hand side.
Could the pad (where it touches the pin) wear out at all? If I can't fix it, I'm going to throw standard front brakes on it. Maybe BF XR, who knows? |

If its the pads rattling you can get some pad goo and it sticks the pad to the piston available at most auto shops and should fix it , its usually caused thru the piston creeping back in to the cylinder (brake Knock off)

It is the pad and caliper rattling against the caliper bracket/pad retainer.

I've finally found it. Brackets are mounted on the wrong sides. The pad springs/R Clips were pushing the caliper back so when the brakes were applied, the caliper would come forward and clunk, pushing against the spring.
Should the bracket be mounted the right way, the spring would push the caliper and pad the same way as if the brakes were applied. So glad I've solved the problem |
