WD often come standard witha lock on the hard drive, have you used the software disc that come with the hard drive, if you didn't get one, go to WD'd website and download it, I had the same problem but once i install the software it was fine, hope this helps

It was working. It's not now. Thats what comes up when you plug it in and try to install the device. I tried the unlock and it said it was already unlocked.

Are you using the same usb cable that came with it?
Try using another one, preferably of short length.. As these portable drives don't have an external power source, they rely on power through the usb and some longer cables dont supply the drive with enough power.

You need a minimum service pack level to enable some usb devices to work.

Of course a virus can delete a partition as quick as a flash (pardon the pun)

on that note, if youre using a laptop, plug it into the wall or get a 2-to-1 usb cord

Same here. I had one which did the same thing, and that was the end of it. Couldn't access it and it was not worth the money to have a professional extract the data from it.

I took it back and exhanged it for a new one under warranty.

The error occurred when I tried to rip a DVD direct from the DVD drive to the USB HDD and not to the C drive first.

i found the Western Digital drives don't like swapping from computer to computer and like to 'reformat' themselves. Haven't had a problem with the Seagate ones yet. (except for the one inside my HP elite that decided to eat itself)

Found the problem. Volume was missing, unsure of what happened there? Created a new simple volume and formatted it to ntfs. Fine now.

Just learnt above drives at tafe lol.
