The only thing I know about the difference is that 4.0 litres usually have different Hydraulic Lifters and there is a difference in the size of the Water jacket ports?

4litre head slightly better designed or something, everything eseries is interchangable motor wise, but ppl usually go for an Update, not a downgrade :P

Maybe the head isn't stock or it has an aftermarket cam.... Even shorter diff gears?? Maybe something is wrong with your car?

A 3.9L head will increase compression for sure, but as to wether this will overcome the swirl of the EA head in regards to possible performance gain is yet to be said.

I am running an EA 3.9L head on the EF bottom end going into my car, so will see what the dyno says sooner then later.

yup the compression will be higher. This is because the chambers on a EA head are smaller in volume due to a little metal 'divider' between the valves. This was removed on later model heads. I doubt very much that it would make that much of a difference to the performance. Maybe the motor's just in good nick!
