Default Trailer/tow bar damage and insurance Q's

Hi fellas, just have a question in regards to the current situation I am in. I was involved in a multi-vehicle accident a small while back (no fault of my own) in which I was rear ended in a BA wagon which had a trailer attached (a personal work vehicle) via the heavy duty factory tow bar. The damage sustained includes a bent in rear tail gate on the trailer, slight bends to the mounts on which the trailer base is attached to, tow bar tongue has been bent upwards slightly and apparently the actual tow bar structure that is bolted to the chassis needs to be replaced. Other than that the front number plate on the car is slightly bent in with no obvious damage to the actual bumper bar itself (small scuff marks which should polish out). The car chassis is fine with no bends or panel damage at all.

According to a few assessors the total repair bill would come to approximately $3000 which is obviously covered by my insurance. Now whether this quote is inflated or not I don't know but to me all damages seem minor (for each item to be repaired/replaced) and yes although things have been slightly bent out of shape I don't see it posing any safety risks/premature wear on things if left as is (maybe someone can enlighten me on this).

The trailer is a regular Kessner 7X4 with a 900mm high cage spray painted in gloss black and it was priced at just over $1700 to repair it. The whole things set me back about $1200 and from what I've been told and through research you can pick up a new similar trailer for just over $2000 or so.

So I just wanted to know if trailers are treated the same as vehicles in regards to being written off and if so can I buy back the trailer back and re-register it? Also if the insurance company does agree to repair everything do I have a choice to leave the trailer as is and still receive some form of lower payout?

I will obviously speak with the insurance company soon however I would like to know if anyone has experienced getting trailers repaired via insurance etc and also some opinions on how I can best approach the insurance company/ repairers. Thanks in advance

Firstly, yes I imagine you could buy the trailer back, but that's only if they write it off.
Second, because it was attached to the wagon they will be treating both as a whole, ie one claim.
Third if you were hit why claim on your insurance (assuming the other party had none)
You are probably very lucky that the impact was absorbed by the trIler and tow bar, otherwise the wagon would have been bent and written off.
Won't hurt to ask the insurer though

if its not your fault i would have though you can ask for a cash to the value of the repair.
if you are going through your insurance make a call and ask for the money and then leave the car for yourself to fix.

Trailers are covered. But apparently not for total. Only an agreed sum. I was quoted a one thousand dollar pay out on a 2500 dollar trailer.
