Well John_XR6 and I have finished installing the MPFI in my car. Got it running but im hacing some problems with it.
1. The car is hard to start, cranks over 5 times before it comes to life 2. When I rev the car, it splutters for a sec then picks up to 2000RPM straight away 3. When I put the car into drive it drops from 700 to 500 goes to die, then picks back upto 600, When you drive forward it splutters, jerks for about 1m then comes to life by flying up to 2000RPM 4. The injectors are kinda noiser than Johns, instead of a quiet tick its more of a loud tick, and when I sit in the car, there is a wierd slight vibration thru the car. Just to give you some info... we fitted a MPFI dizzy, in the EXACT same placement as the CFI one. I also used the ED TPS insead of the EA one since i only had a ED Throttlebody. The wiring matched up perfectly. Dont think thats it but thought id let you guys know. The Fuel pump thats in the car is the Silver one, thats the MPFI one right? Im a little stumped and would love anyone to tell me Whats goin on Thanks

adjust the base idle?
any idea if the injectors are clear/clogged up. a while ago my injectors were kinda stuffed (too much driving on LPG) and were very clogged up. the car was very rough, hesitated heaps JUST off idle (unless the car was at FULL operating temp)

Make an attempt to time the ignition properly.

If the injectors have been sitting for a while they will be a bit noisy and won't work that good for the first few kilometres, I had some of the same problems when I went to BBM. It went away after a bit but it wasn't as bad as yours.
Also, the MPI dizzy's TDC position is different to the CFI one's, so if you put it in 'the exact same position' your timing may seriously be busted. That would cause most of your probs. Sundeep |

Did you put in a new high pressure filter?
Check idle and timing.

OK just to update everyone, i just got back from micks, we changed the dizzy around as specified im my work shop manual...the car still did the same thing but it revved better. Did the timing again. Same! so then i ask mick "are you sure youve got the right fuel pump, is the cylinder inside silver" (get a blank look) (me)"Have you even pulled it out" (mick) "No, it silver on top". (me) "HAHAHAHA, pull it out i bet you the pump is black" so anyway i pull it out and sure enough its a CFI one. as soon as he started it the injectors were very noisy as though there wasnt enough fuel so thats what got me thinking. im hopefully going to hunt one down at pick a part tommorw.

LOL, simple as problem, just not getting enough fuel. Change pumps and hopefully should all be good.

hehe when i did my MPFI conversion on the EA i was given the wrong fuel pump by the wrecker. Being as late as it was i didnt bother to check and put it in, drove it for a week and man it ran like shit. so gutless, idled crap as, noisy injectors, noisy pump. Put in a MPFI pump ( physically larger pump ) and all was sweet

That sounds exactly like what my EA is doing. I was apparently given an MPFI pump by the wrecker, but I'm not so sure now! Let me know how you go with it.

Hopefully this sorts it all out for you mate ;)
Hmmm, i seem to recall saying the words "A lack of fuel pressure could cause it. Maybe check the regulator, filter and FUEL PUMP ( :P ). lol Oh, and in reference to the message you left me, sorry mate but i haven't got one lying around. Don't know anyone off the top of my head who does either. :( |

UPDATE
After fitting the new fuel pump it runs Im having some issues thou.... While sitting at the lights in Drive it sits at around 550rpm, its fine but goes to chuck a fit occasionally (It splutters, etc). Im thinking its the injectors? since they look pretty crappy. Was going to fit another set tomorrow After driving for 20mins the Average dropped to 19.1 then back to 20.2, this isnt the result i was hoping for! Is this because of injectors? any thoughts?

Rob: That actually makes bugger all difference. When I did my conversion, I changed to an MPFI dizzy, and couldn't get the timing right at all with it in the supposed correct position.
Changed it back to the cfi position, and got the timing fine. It's more about getting the drive shaft to line up with pole 1 correctly... you could mount it anyway as long as the rotor lines up with post 1 at TDC. InitialD: Sounds like it's definately overfuelling. If you've got other injectors, try em out, I changed mine a while back and it made a world of difference. Also, the usual suspects, pressure reg, map sensor, maybe ozy sensor (though I doubt it) and double check the tps wiring for good connections. The tps can be a bit touchy. |

Mine will stay fine (idling) for a while, then it's like it just suddenly decides that idling sucks and the revs just drop. it threatens to stall and carries on then recovers again. I cleaned the IAC sensor as it was full of oil, and it helped a fair bit. But the problem is still there... :( I also disconnected the ISC and it did the same thing, so it's not ISC related (in my case, anyway) ;) |

UPDATE.....
Well i swapped over the injectors, and the performance was alot better aswell as they being quieter than the old ones. Also discovered that my average was 23.5. Well thought I would check the sensors out to discover that when the LPG system that was in the car, when it was installed they cut the O2 sensor???! : Reconneced the O2, And what you know? my average dropped to 19.0 in 5mins of driving. (Dave aka Thanatos have you checked yours? _2: ) The only problem that im getting is its idle. when it sits in park it is 600 when its cold, then 550-600 when its hot sometimes, but most of the time has no idle like the ISC isnt working, but it holds idle in drive fine at 550 (little rough thou). Should I simply just ajust it with the idle screw? and what to? ( can i do this with the air box taken out?, sorry MPFI is all new to me : )

ive disconnected the ISC and it stalls straight away. so Im guessing its working to some extent? ive tried another ISC and it does the same.
Also Just for future refrence, When i did the MPFI conversion I ran a wire from the Grey/white wire on the CFI ISC loom (engine bay) up to the GREY/WHITE wire on the MPFI loom. thats right isnt it?
