I was thinking, when you buy one of these tuners, you either get a generic tune sent with it or get a tune done on a dyno and use the Xcal to programme your ECU or get a tune 'emailed' to you. Presumably this means the tunes are just a file. There must be lots of people out there with a tune file, either generic or custom for their cars.
Is their any scope in sharing or trading these tunes so others can try them and building up a list of what tunes people have found to work well on their Fords with details of the vehicle and mods? I know in a perfect world we need to go and have our cars tuned on a dyno, but there's lots of talk about generic tunes and email tunes making an improvement over a factory tune, particularly when people have the same mods. eg. running LPG, or catback or CAI. What are people's thoughts on this?

I'm not 100% sure but I think you will find that as flash tunes are based on a vehicles individual original ECU map read, they are only suited to the vehicle that the original ECU read is taken from and are not transferrable among others whether they be the same make and model or not.

Tunes are locked to the vehicle.
And without testing the tunes on the dyno who knows what could happen to your car... |

but how about these tunes that are sent to you by email. How would these be locked to the vehicle? Wouldn't they just be a file?

The generic tunes will still work OK with minor mods such as exhaust and intake upgrades but are only a very basic tune. A custom tune not only gives you the maximum performance and economy from your vehicle, but is specifically designed to all your modifications, it also allows you the option of further tuning capabilities should you wish to do further performance upgrades in the future (ie injectors, turbos etc....) it should just be a case of emailing the tuner, telling them what upgrades have been done and they can then make the required changes to the tuning file

When we email a tune to be loaded by the end user it is sent in a special format with the seriel number of X3 that the tune is going to be loaded into, via our special live load software. There is now way that you can share tunes.A tuner can send a tune to another tuner and this can be opened and modified if needed via the sct advantage software.
Hope this answers the question
