Default Rego expired - Forgot to make payment - What do I do?

Guys,

My rego was due on the 16 Sept 07. I forgot to make the payment so now the car is unregistered. What do I need to do to get it registered again and is it going to cost extra?

I went on the Vicroads website and it states initial registration fees are like $1,700! Is that how much I have to pay?

Not sure about Vic, but in NSW you get 3 months to pay it after the renewal date.

Go to Vicroads tomorrow and pay it, they give you a few weeks to pay but you will be unable to drive the car until the rego is paid.

EDIT: You only have to pay the usual amount not the $1700.

I think Vic is 30 days, you can pay it Bpay or post office I think, normal rego only -don't ever pay a BS fee unless they invoice you.
For 1700 I'd send that invoice straight to the lawyer anyway.

You can pay at any Westpac branch too.

Plus your insurance is void if the vehicle's unregistered.

You have three months after expiry in which to renew your registration. Of course, during that time you should not be driving the car.
You can pay at Vicroads, bank or over the phone.

Excellent. Once rego lapses your driving on expired rego, not unregistered. 500 fine for expired, 2000 or something like that for unregistered.

If you can prove you are driving to or from a place of repair, you won't be fined.

Even if it's after 3 months expired it won't cost you $1700.. in SA they just charge you an admin fee of $15 or so.

What's the difference between expired rego and unregistered?

OK i rang vicroads and here is the deal.

If your rego expires, you have 3 months to pay. You can't drive the car from the day it expires, but if you pay within the 3 months, there is no "penalty" and you just continue as per normal.

If it has expired for more than 3 months, then you have to get your car road worthied again. You then have to pay for plates again ($25) + cost of rego ($575). So you pay roughly $100 more than standard renewal + hassles.

The initial rego (the $1700 that scared me) is just what you pay when you buy the car new.

PS. I made the payment this morning so I could drive to work. Vicroads said just print out the receipt and keep it in the glove box as proof of renewal in case I got pulled over. It takes ~2 business days for the payment to make its way to Vicroads, even if its via Internet.
