Thumbs down Database error

Why do i keep getting a white screen stating a database error. I've had three in about five minutes just now. And it did it yesterday. And the day before that. And it'll probably do it tomorrow. Why??

it's just excessive load on the server. could also be when things are being upgraded/backed up on the server. I've had it for the last 30 minutes. It's all good, just a lot of people access this site!

Seriously though, I think some people need to remember that running a site like this is not an easy task. Cut the admin team some slack because if they didnt put all the effort in you would not have a site full stop. A few outs every now and then are not the end of the world.

A few? Try 20+ a night. Who is bagging the admin in this thread? Are you reading into peoples questions a lot more than you need to?

I wish I knew what actually is causing it - it isn't a load issue from member activity and I can't see anything else running on the server when it happens that might be causing it. I can see that the server load averages during the period that it happens are off the scale but when I look at what else is running there is nothing obvious.

The issue has been escalated to the ISP to check whether they do anything in the way of housekeeping during that window (which is about 3.30-4.00 a.m their time) as I cannot see any other logical reason.

For those questioning the actual scaling of the server, the average server load is around 1.6 with a normal peak in the 4.5 range. When the db errors occur it is in the 20's but there is less activity than there is in the 6.00-8.00 p.m time slot.

Anyone with ideas is welcome to contribute to the knowledge pool.

Cheers
Russ

yep i get it on occasions too, sometimes i just do suming else and come on later, a couple of times i have gone to favourites menu to and old web page and it has let me in straight away, could it be the isp is running out of bandwidth, perhaps they are hosting another forum that gets busy about the time this data base error occurs?

We get it too don't forget.
The server is fine and the hosting company has enough bandwidth to go around, if it was easy it would have been sorted ages ago.

at the back end, what is the database?

is it page file based?

is it one single file? whats the go.

I am thinking along the lines of an indexing problem.....
This would be why nothing else points here, server etc etc....

Just a thought...

No, are you? IMO your last comment was pretty out of place, no-one was bagging the admin, and it seems like you want to start another 'us v them' war.

Back on topic, the only 2 things I could think of after reading Russ's post was the server doing housekeeping, which he mentioned, and the flash ads at the top of the pages sucking bandwidth. Every time someone pushes refresh on a page it has to load the icons, pictures, text, signatures, avatars and the flash ads, which ads up when a few hundred people are clicking refresh every couple of minutes. I don't think there were as many database errors until the flash ads went up, although they still did happen. Maybe it's the straw that broke the camels back?

Crazy!

I dont know much about the workings of a website... but what is server load actually measured in? It's processing power or its available bandwidth or something?

i.e. what "should" it mean when these numbers spike like that?

I have to say, its very very very rare that i have this problem... i maybe see this error once per month. Not at regular times etc.

Feel free to IP check me to see where i'm coming in from (non descript commonwealth government infrastructure lol), it may help?
