Default Things to look for in an ED Fairmont?

Hi

Things that go wrong?

I've got one in my sights, just need to know if it's stuffed..

Thanks in advance,
Jake

Welcome to the forums!

The ED isn't a bad car. Most of the problems that came out with the EA were fixed by the time the ED came out. Despite looking similar to the EA, the ED also has a stiffer body. As bindi said, the head can be a problem, but even some BA's have known to blow head gaskets. Any car with cast iron block and alloy head can have these problems.

Fairmont is a nice choice. Fairmont Ghias are even nicer. Just watch out for things like power windows, which can give trouble. On my EA, I have had to replace one power window and get one fixed twice (in three years of owning the car), but again, with the ED being a newer car, it shouldn't have as many issues with that. Take the Fairmont for a test drive, and see how it feels to drive.

doesnt matter wat model it is. if it hasnt been looked after by prevoius owners it will be problematic. u could find a perfect condition ea with nothing wrong with it, or be stuck with a bomb ed with nothing going for it.

Yeah. Finding a good one is important. You can initially save a few thousand if you buy a not-so-well-looked-after one, but you will end up spending a fortune on repairs and trying to get it right. It's just not worth it.

When you test drive it, check how well it starts and how smooth the idle is. If it has a rough idle, it may be signs of a head gasket on it's way out.

Good luck with it

I just bought an ED Fairmont today.. The head has just been done, as well as that it has a new radiator, EL GT rims, 3.7 LSD diff, new front brakes, Mid mounted DVD player, cd player, Very good condition, all panels are original, extractors, 2.5" sports exhaust, etc.

I'll post pics when i work out how to use it..

Very nice, did you buy it from the dealer in Frankston? Did you save much off the sticker price of 8k?

Yes, i got it from the dealer in frankston. I didn't get much off $8k, but a little bit.

Thanks XRated, it certainly goes well with the 3.7's. Though, the speedo's out a bit :-(

Hi mate

Umm, driving her tonight in the rain, i noticed she doesn't Limo up very well.. Is there a LSD in there? or only 3.7 diff gears? When was it done?

The seats buggered, how do i fix it? lol

Also, i put a DVD in the dvd player, and flipped the screen down, and it says no signal, even though the dvd is in there spinning.. What wires do i need to connect up?

Why was the fuse out of the amp too? does it work?

I'm going to have to replace the front struts, as they're buggered.

Umm, what else.. I'm trying to think.. Oh yeh, how do i fix the rev meter/speedo? It's annoying me now, being so far out.

Other than that, it's a grouse car. She's getting a wash tomorrow, so i'll take some pics.

Cheers,
jake

hey cahmp sent u a pm a couple of days ago with some info for u

Anyway your q

Well the dvd first there should be two remotes (both were given to the dealer) one is for the unit the other does the tft screen its a bit complicated but u have to set the jvc head unit to av 2 then the pictuer will come up. u dont have to touch the dvd player at all (besides turning it on)and just have the screen turned on.(was installed at jb dandy) rear speakers were playing up think they or the amp my be stuffed worth cheaking as the speakers are awsome u wount need a sub
(may be just a small one) trust me and thats why i pulled the fuse just forgot to conect it again

only single spinner sorry mate i changed the diff and gears about 7 mths ago
still have the recipt i think oh and a reason for it not bagging up so well may be that it is wearing 245 17 all round thats not small rubber and the reason i poped the old diff

Struts i didt know about the seat was in my pm the adjustment was stuffed and i traded it in a cople of days later so i didt fix it just needs new adjuster on the side wrecker should have them

cheak your email mate theres some stuffhere if u want any of it ket me know if there anythiong u want to know pm or email me thanks mate

Hi mate.

Thanks for answering the questions..

I never got a PM or Email, so i dunno what happened there..

I'll go and check out the dvd player now..

I've got the new adjustment for the seat, and the drivers side mirror was cracked, so i picked up a new one.

What the hell did you spill in the car? Looks like coke or something all over the passenger side.. hehe

Anything you have from the car that i should have? i.e: receipts, etc?

I'll probably grab them off you at a meet or something..

Any idea how much it is to get a LSD mechanism installed into the diff?

Cheers,
Jake

I reckon with that 3.7 diff your gunna be going faster than your old car.
