Imagine being stuck on a Melbourne freeway at 100 km/h and nothing is working like it's meant to, except the steering! Sounds like a computer game or an assassination attempt.

^^ first gen model of explorer had these issues, along with the exploding firestone tyres they came OEM with, and general build quality issues ment it had a very bad rep.
Once had a VN calais do something similar when I was working in wholesale, taped the brakes, didnt disengage so just hit cancel on the controll pannel they had, disabled cruise. The things that dont make any sence is that for all this to occur there has to be multipul failures with different components at 1 given time. brake switch/cruise switch falure on brake pedal failure of switch on steeringwheel/dash failure of auto to engage N * some wont allow you to bump it into netural but will override if the button is depressed* failure of brakes that as a design rule have to be able to stop a car at WOT from 100kmh as per ADR regs failure of ignition to be turned off * this is possible as some models wont allow this to occur, some will only allow engine off but will remain is ACC position but still allowing engine to be shut down. Ill be very interested to see what crash investigation unit have to say once finished their report on the *ghost car*

I can understand elctronics failing but I will be curious about it not being able to be shifted into neutral when the button is depressed, being a mechanical part of this whole equation.

Not even neutral, but what about selecting 3rd, 2nd or 1st?
There are so many ways to stop a car and no, this bloke doesn't deserve the benefit of the doubt either. It's just lucky no-one was hurt by his actions. My accelerator cable became jammed in peak hour one afternoon with only 3 metres between me and the car in front (new Mercedes). Shut the car down straight away and tapped the pedal to release the cable. I know a lot of people would have just crashed into the car in front. Basic mechanical aptitude should be a compulsory requirement of getting a licence.
