Hey guys,
i drove my ed to my mates place so i could put it up for sale, i took out my CD player before i got there. the next day my mate tried to start the car to move it but no go, so i was around there today and i had a look at it. the car will turn over but wont fire. i took off the spark plug lead n put a screw drive in it to check for a spark, nothing!! i check the dizzy the center carbon seems alright n the contacts are clean. i had a quick look from under the car at the coil n its got no burnt leads. this has happened to me before and after many hours under the bonnet i clicked and worked out it was because the stereo wasn’t in, as soon as i put it back in away she went. part of the smart lock i guess. so my question being would it be something to do with the dizzy or coil? or would it be the stereo. if it is the stereo why would it start without it at home here n not at his place? i'm heading back there in a couple of days does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? |

Put a standard ford radio in it... if the only thing between it starting and not starting is the stereo, stick a radio in it to keep it happy.
I would say you are right, in that the lack of a radio upsets the smartlock system.

Interesting scenario!
If there is no spark from the dizzy, and you have installed a radio back in it, could be the module, or crank angle sensor. I would never of associated a radio installation, to be integrated with the smart lock system. But if it all works as you say....then I think there is something in that for all of us! In EBII-ED models the smartlock is also wired through the radio. There are 2 green/yellow(?) wires going into the radio plug - join them together. ;)

yeah holbrookau is correct, if u notice u wont have a flashing smart lock light on ur dash, just solder the 2 green/yellow wires together and u will have startage.

yeah early e-series had the wire just joined into the back of the radio plug. thats why u should never cut the plug off and just tap into the wires or get a adapter plug for it. i had the problem with a mates ed that i put a stereo in, i called a auto elec and i figured it out and told him were it was and he soldered it back and charged me 66 bucks :(
