Default How do You Get Rid of Your Old Engine Oil

There is another thread going on here asking how often you change your engine oil. Most people seem to say every 5,000km, so I guess you do it yourselves, rather than paying somebody to do it.

Just wondering, what do you do with the old stuff?

Last time I did my own oil change, rather than paying somebody to do it, disposing of the old oil was real problem. I had to drive half way across Sydney to find an EPA collection point that would accept it. That was about 10 years ago, though. It was too much hassle so I've been paying for oil changes ever since.

Default Oil

Hey Abacus

I live in Canberra and change my oil and filter every 5,000. I put the old oil in the empy oil container and take it to the local tip as they have an oil recycle area. I would contact your local council and see what they do. It doesn't cost anythign either

Yeh I hear ya Abacus.

I too put my used oil in an old oil container. But then my local servo charges me $5 to allow them to put it in their collection device?

$5 is steep and I've told em. But I need to dump the oil responsibly. Probably cost me more than $5 in time and fuel to take it elsewhere - so thats what I've been doing with mine.

I pour it into the nearest storm water drain...

Nah seriously, I keep it in old containers... I usually have about 4 5ltr containers before I'll take it to the dump where they process it there.

Mine stays in the garage until I get 4 5L containers full and then I drop it at the recycling centre in Yagoona. Any more in one trip and it would cost $$.

Usually just put it into the bottle after I've filled the car up. Then it all sits around til I wreck a car. Then it goes into the fuel tank.

Gravity filter it through a natural fibre rope and use it in the 4 stroke mower and any excess I take to the local tip.
They will take up to 20L for free

Most recycle centres i.e. tips will take your oil for free. I know the vermont tip in vic does.

Last time I changed my oil I took the old oil and filter down to my local mechanic (who I bought the new oil and filter from) and gave it to them to dispose of. Apparently the place that sells it has to accept the old stuff back by law, as they have the means to dispose of it safely.

The local tips here have oil recycling centres, so I just take mine there. I have also seen some adverts in some supacheap stores advertising some sort of exchange oil program but I think it is when you buy Shell oil? I couldn't find anything about it on their website, though.
