Hey folks, had an interesting talk with a service station owner the other day, and apparently Mobil has decided to withdraw from the South Australian Market in the very very near future, the Mobil up the street from us is due to close mid April. Has anyone else heard about this?
If this is a repost or has been spread all over the TV news forgive me, but I dont care. :P

Its because the Government has asked Mobil to supply thier fuel as the local drinking water, as its been proven to taste better then the water there. Just kidding :P

Interesting, but I have not heard anything myself. I have noticed the Mobil outlets aroud town looking a bit shabby whereas BP, Caltex etc are getting
makeovers big time. Shell's pretty crap too, but IMO Woolworths servos are the best! |

I dont really doubt that, I have noticed when I was living in adelaide that there were a number of mobil stations closing. there is hardly any on the way out of adelaide along main north road, it sucks when the company fuel car is a mobil card

About five years ago the Mobil Roadhouse in Kynuna, western Qld was taken over by BP.
Yet strangely Mobil were one of the last to offer the old leaded fuel upto about three/four years ago in The Alice. So I guess don't be surprised to see BP pop up where Mobil were.

Yeah I think they maybe closing up shop all together. We used to have like three or maybe more Mobil stations in Bendigo but they have closed and only have one left. Also the same with Shell only have 2 now, seems like BP is taking the whole market in Bendigo

I used to work at Caltex about a year ago was the last shift I did.
Rumours were ripe about Mobil pulling out of australia when they never bothered to upgrade thier refinery to cope with new laws regarding fuel. The service station australia magazine brought this up as they had also started shifting the main infrastucture of Mobil to Sinapore. About 5 years prior to that my boss back then told me Mobil were pulling out of Queensland. They had a lot of difficulties with litigation from old franchisees when they put in thier multi site franchisees too. ie the one franchisee had at minum 7 sites. A lot of the older ones (the franchisees that got kicked out) had an older program called "circle of excellence" it was a mobil incentive to have sites looking and working thier best, for each year they got into the "circle of excellence" they were supposed to be awarded an extra year on thier lease. Mobil renegged on this part of the deal when they wanted the multi site franchises. Thats a bit of background for ya. Another good way to keep up with all this type of stuff is: http://www.ssa.org.au/magazine/index.htm |

The one on FTG road and Springvale road closed recently, hardly suprising when there are two servos on other sides of the intersection......one of them being another Mobil, how the hell they planned that I do not know.

It was probably never "planned" My bets would be one of the two used to be an ESSO prior to the Mobil take over of ESSO. Much like the Golden Fleece/Caltex merge and the more recent Caltex/Ampol Merge. |
