Brakes and Traction control would be about all, I reckon.

AU2's got better brakes and different coloured LCD's, different stereo, different locking system (although late au1's had the same locking system as au2/3), and slightly different cluster. Also a couple of different colours.

they both use the same amount of fuel i think..(V8 and I6)
i have an AU1 lane and it is great.. i believe if you CAN get an AU2 lane then go for it just for the better brakes.. but if you have found 2 and one is an AU1 and the other an AU2... dont choose the AU2 because its an AU2.. choose by what your after etc..

Better brakes and dash are different.
The sound system is for the s2 are in dash 6 cd where as the ser 1 had a stacker in the boot. Ive heard some have had trouble with the in dash where (cross fingers) ive had no trouble with the boot stacker.

Don't know about adaptive shift. My AUII has only power and econ. I thought that was an XR thing. The AUII also has the laminated firewall that helps remove a little more engine noise from the cabin.

my S1 has TCS and ABS..
but only single piston brakes rather than the twin pots that AU2s came with

Functionally, it was twin pot brakes in the S2 vs 1 pot brakes in the S1, the dash cluster is slightly different, the stereo is an indash unit rather than boot mounted and the laminated firewall (that Dauphin seems to like mentioning in these sorts of discussions : )
I have a S1 lane. I have changed all of the stereo (the stock stereo is sitting beside me in a box, anyone wanna buy it ) so that doesnt matter, i am getting around to upgrading the brakes, so that wont matter either. Im about to sound deaden the whole car, so that wont matter either. So after that, the only difference between mine and a S2 is the dash layout... (Dont ask me why i said all of that, but it sounded good at the time ;))

so i think what kryzak is trying to say is...
if you are going to modify it at all... dont worry about what series it is.. as all lanes are be-AU-tiful

Did the series 1 have the sunglasses holder in the Lanes? The series 2 got a different windscreen, can't remember exactly what it's called or what it's for I think it was to cut UV or something.

the bottom line is... the S2 is better. If you get an S1, you'll want to turn it into an S2. I waited specifically to get a S2 Forte instead of an S1... Me no like S1's. Well, compared to an S2 anyway. I'd have an S1 over nearly every other normal car on the road....
but yeah, 'lane's are b-e-AU-tiful. I wish my car was a 'lane.

Bottom line is, if they are the same price, get the S2. If not, dont fret. The brakes are not that noticable unless you are driving the car hard, the road noise is no different between them (that i have experienced between my car and a s2 lane around here) and the stereo is exactly that same to listen to!

Adaptive shift was never on Fairlanes, only XR's. Main differences between series I and II were interior trims, clear LCD's as opposed to orange backlit ones (and this was across all models, not just Fairlanes), sound system upgrades and the mechanical changes that were standard across the range - things like brakes etc.
